My two neighbors who built an S20 had a local Missoula sign shop design and apply the vinyl to their project. The sign shop estimated it would take about 3-4 hours. It actually took them about 14. They showed up about 10am and didn't leave until around 2am.

The place that I'm going to have do it has done all of our trucks. They do a very nice job, but they are expensive. I suspect they've built in plenty of time. If I recall correctly the quote is for around $2500. That would include what you see in the proof and additional wrap on the wings.

It seems like a simple enough paint scheme. Why not just shoot it with paint? You already have practice on the cowl, I would think it would be considerably less expensive.
Then you could say you did it all yourself :D
BTW, a friend had a S7 with floats and homemade wheel penetrating skis, what a fun airplane. He used it to go to his cabin in Canada.

Good points. I'm sure it would be less expensive, and you can paint over Oratex. But, I really don't trust my painting skills, the Cowl took 5 coats before I got one that I thought was acceptable. There was a lot of wet sanding between coats, so the process was time-consuming.

I also don't really want to turn my shop into a paint booth. I was able to paint the cowl by simply throwing some cheap plastic tarps over workbenches, toolboxes etc... But, I think that I'd have to go to some effort to keep overspray off of everything if I painted the wings and fuselage.

I do value saying "I did it all myself". So far I haven't farmed out anything. But, I'm afraid it would be a lot of work and the results would be questionable.

Whatever you decide, it will be a very cool airplane. I had never painted but had a work friend who was good and gave me tips along the way.
One thing, no paint booth necessary if you can wheel it outside where drift onto neighbors is not a issue.
A calm spring morning before bugs are out can get great painting conditions. Easier where you are.
But I understand the reasoning behind just farm it out and be done with it.
Good luck, your close!

Greg

Jack, as you've already figured out, there's a knack to using a spray gun and getting a good finish, and it's hard to learn on your own. I don't blame you one bit for farming it out.

However, if you know an autobody guy that might show you the tricks for a hundred dollars and a six pack of his favorite gear...

Dabbling in residential construction I cannot help but think that the bottom of a porch column may not be the best tie off point! ;)

Congrats on the progress!

Are you being serious here?

That's a load-bearing column with a concrete footer. I hardly think that little 100Hp Rotax put it to any kind of a test.

I was trying to think of what I might have done that looks stupid on the internet, but that one never occurred to me.

I'd definitely use some wheel chocks too Jack. Knots come untied and ropes break.

Congrats on getting it running.

I’ve seen recommendations that you shouldn’t run the engine without wings attached. Rotational stability? Is that a real consideration? I’ve also seen Mike Patey do exactly the same thing, so there’s that.

Congratulations on a red letter day!

Jack, congratulations! I love seeing people build planes and hit milestones.

I'll have to admit that for a second I thought I was about to watch a disaster video when the plane lurched forward. Speaking as someone who let a plane get away from me once... Chocks and someone sitting in the plane, holding the brakes if they're working. If they're not, at least you have someone riding along who can shut it down.

David

As light as the plane is with no wings, only 3 gallons of fuel, and the big tires, I think it would jump chocks in a heartbeat. I thought about running over to the hangar and getting chocks, but I decided it would just be theater and not worth the trouble.

As far as knots coming untied... I'm trying hard not to become offended.... :D As a lifelong sailor and self-described master of knots, my bowline and clove hitch were not going to come untied. That 1/2" polyester 3 strand dock line has a breaking strength of something like 5000 pounds. That probably would pull the shop down before it breaks, but you'd have to hook it to a 100Hp tractor to do it.

Jack

Congrats, Jack! Absolutely thrilling! I hope to experience that one day.
