i have had my rans s6, the side by side version of essentially the same ship, for about 2 years and love it. i would not fly in an aircraft i built so it had about 600 hours when i bought it. a number of people have commented on the excellent welding - "best i ever saw" said one very senior a&p/ai. i like tail draggers and have the endorsement but after a lot of checking i found the rans 6 & 7 airframes are so short that the 100hp rans is just heavy enough to make for surprise nose-overs so i went with the trike. i would have accepted that with the s7 but they are so popular there is about a 15-20-thousand dollar premium on them over the side by side. i understand the s7 gets better about that with bigger tires.

Both wings, the flaps, and the ailerons are done. The fuselage was delivered last week. I got it uncrated and in the shop on Saturday. Attachment: IMG_3628.JPG Attachment: IMG_8370.JPG I feel like I'm starting all over on the Dunning Kruger curve. Inventorying the parts, reading the manual. Getting the wings done was a major accomplishment, but there is a lot left to do. Jack

I haven't updated this thread in a while, but progress on the S7 continues. The pace slowed down over the summer, that was to be expected. But now that it has snowed and its cold I expect to be putting lots of shop hours. The stringers are all in place, the baggage compartment has been built and fitted, all the sticks and rudder pedals are installed, pitch autopilot servo is installed and wired, the trim servo is wired, floorboards installed, instrument panel fitted. Lots of powder coating and painting. Most of the wiring in the fuselage is done. Attachment: IMG_3562.JPG Attachment: IMG_7545.JPG Attachment: IMG_1981.JPG Over the Thanksgiving break, I got the bottom of the fuselage covered in Oratex. Attachment: IMG_6452.JPG Attachment: IMG_0540.JPG This weekend I'll be covering the left side of the fuselage. The Oratex is marked and cut out ready for gluing. Attachment: IMG_9393.JPG Once the fuselage is covered, I'll put it up on its landing gear and start moving on to the panel and the engine. Overall I'm satisfied with the progress and expect to fly it next Summer. Jack

I’ve got a few decisions to make that that will affect the completion. Probably the biggest is whether to paint on accent stripes or just slap on some stickers and call it good. Jack

I meant to stop by this past weekend - now I really wish I would have. It's looking good, and I can second Brad's comments - Jack is doing an amazing job. I can't wait to see this thing fly. P.S. Jack - I've watched a ton of Trent Palmer videos since spending the afternoon with you. I need to order a kit or start searching a little harder P.P.S After one video, I decided to go spend about 45 minutes in the Navion at 100mph and 1000'. It was actually pretty fun.
