I'm thinking I'll just take a trailer out to Hays and pick up the fuselage kit. It sounds like they will knock a few buck off if they don't have to crate it. It's only a 4.5 hour drive.

I also think it will buy it in smaller "chunks". Just get the fuselage and tail kit first, then the wings, then the covering kit, then the finishing kit, lastly the FWF kit. That would spread the money out over a couple of years.

Jeff, your comment about the GW and Floats is a good one. I asked Randy about the 1320 GW and whether that was an LSA limit or a structural limit. I don't need it to be an LSA because I've got a regular license and medical anyway. He said as a homebuilt, the GW would be 1500 pounds or a little more. Basically, I'd develop the POH for the plane. As I look into this further, I'll dig into this because floats are important for what I want to ultimately do with the plane.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Jack

jack, i like the Rans, but do yourself a favor and take a quick look into the highlander. That is a seriously impressive machine

Jeff

The Highlander does look excellent. But, in all my daydreams the plane has tandem seating. I'm sure I could get over that if there were some compelling reason for side by side seating, but I don't see that yet.

I've got more research to do.

Jack

If money is not a limiting factor, you might want to take a look at a Glastar Sportsman and the associated 2-week to Taxi program. http://glasairaviation.com/

There were a number of them parked next to us at OSH this in HBC so I took the opportunity to take good look at them and very much liked what I saw. The airframe quality was very nice and I like the fact that you can convert them from tri-cycle to tail dragger to floats and back again.

Rans does not give a time estimate for the project on their website, at least not that I can find.

typically those advertised times are to reach a point with the plane 99% built and only a few finishing touches remaining. In other words, about half done in terms of hours.

That's pretty funny. Reminds me of a bathroom tile project... that never got quite done.

Regardless, it's clearly easier and faster to build than a Van's RV. If I could get it done in 1200 hours and 3 years that's about the size of project I'm ready to take on. If I could get it done in 2 years and 800 hours, that would be even better.

I really doubt it's possible to put together an S-7 in 700 hours, unless you're one of those serial builder types. I am based at an airpark where we have one of them. He built something like 14 airplanes. Yeah, he totally could do it. A first-time builder? NO WAY.

Jack,

That is a nice looking plane. Does Rans have a builder's program there? Hayes is close enough that it would be fun to fly out and spend a few dats and have the work continue when you aren't there.

Good site.

I've started two homebuilts, abandoning one and presently losing interest in the other. Van has said -- and he's right -- that before committing to a homebuilt project you should identify what you're going to give up in order to build an airplane.

Good luck!!!

What are your 2 projects, and which one is the abandoning one?

I haven't built an airplane but have rebuilt two. (I did build a 17-foot sailboat from scratch. It's for sale if you want to save some time.)

Doubling the estimated hours is optimistic but that number will get you started without being completely in error.

+1 on throwing away stuff you screw up. The old head who got us started in aircraft restoration had a saying: "If you haven't done it three times, you haven't done it right."

If it's on your list, get started. As my dad used to say, "There's no time like the present."

I abandoned an RV-6 in 1997, when I started a second residency. Presently, there are RV-8 parts in the garage

That depends on the RV model. An RV-12 can easily be built in under 1000 hrs.
