I hit a nice milestone over the New Years break, got the fuselage on its landing gear. Once I had the fuselage covered, I still needed to do all the taping, installing access panels and fairings while it was still on the rotisserie. Once all that was done the next step was to install the gear legs, wheels tires etc...

Now that it's on the wheels it's starting to look a lot more like an airplane. There is still a lot left to do but I'm starting to see the completion in my mind's eye.

Jack, I figure the answer to this question is "yes," but does the Oratex process include reinforcing tapes in all of the same usual places as other fabric processes? I mean everywhere like overtop stringers, longerons, along window frames and the door sills, etc. I'm asking solely out of curiosity.

Your pictures look great!

You have to remember that I've never covered an airplane before, so I'm not sure exactly what get's taped with the traditional processes. With Oratex you only need to put tape where there is a joint (overlap), a protrusion for a fitting or something or a hole. Inspection rings and the like are put on with thin acrylate (Superglue).

You don't put tape on stringers ect.. but you do glue the Oratex down. What you do is cover and shrink the material, then on the back side put a very small quantity of the Oratex glue between the fabric and the stringer. Just let gravity pull the glue between them; I used something like an eyedropper to put a very small bead of the glue in those areas. Wipe off any excess. Once it's dry then you heat it with the heat gun or an iron to activate the glue.

You do put tape over ribs that have the Lexan strips and rivets. There is one rib like that in the tail, but I didn't take a picture. I'll try and remember to take one.

Matt

I've been pretty busy this summer with travel and getting the boys off to college. I've been making steady progress but slow. Now that I'm officially an "empty nester", I'm planning on putting in a lot of time this winter with a goal of flying it next spring.

When I get home tonight I'll up take some pictures and update the thread.

Jack

What the boys are in College!!! Crazy how time flys.

Guess one of my co-workers has a S-7 on straight floats up in MN. Made me think how you were coming along.

Obviously I didn't update this thread back in October like I said I would. Better late than never.

I've been putting in a good bit of time on the project, but since all the major assemblies and parts are finished, it doesn't look that much different than it did a year ago. Here are some of the things I've gotten done:

*Everything is covered with Oratex, including all the control surfaces doors, etc.
*Header tank and fuel lines are plumbed and installed to the firewall.
*Boot Cowl is fitted up.
*Cowling has rough fit up (can't finish until the engine is hung.
*Doors are built and glass installed.
*Most of the wiring in the fuselage and wings is installed.
*Rear seat heater installed
*Lots of parts painted and powder coated.
*Seats upholstered and installed.
*Brakes and brake lines installed.

Here are some recent pictures.

I've reached a point where I really need an engine to keep moving, so I bought one. I found what I think is a decent deal on a used 912is that was installed on an LSA. The plane was damaged in a landing mishap (nobody hurt) but the engine seems to have come through it Ok. It's had a thorough going over including a new gearbox. I bought it from a company that sells LSAs with the 912is and they seem to know the engine inside out, so I'm feeling pretty good about it. The engine has got about 500 hours on it.

The RANS firewall forward kit is for a Rotax 912ULS, that's the carburated version of the engine. I got a 912IS, which has electronic fuel injection. What that means is that I've got some additional work to install the IS since there are extra boxes, pumps, and filters for the computer and fuel injection. It's been done, but there are no directions and I'm going to need to fabricate a bunch of brackets.

After exhaustive research, I'm convinced the "IS" is the way to go. It's a completely modern engine that would be right at home under the hood of a Honda, but it's also a fully certified aircraft engine. Who knew that could be done?

I still think I'm on schedule for flying the plane early this summer. It may be that for the first time in many years I'll be flying something to Oshkosh besides a Bonanza. :D

Matt

I need to update the thread again. I've made a good deal of progress since we hung the engine a little over a month ago. Amazingly, the firewall forward part of the build is almost finished. I'm starting to cut the panel and do the wiring for the Garmin stuff.

I'll post a more complete update with pictures soon.

Jack
