Steve Pierce did the pre-buy on my PA-14. He was my mechanic for 7 years. The only reason he is not working on the Legend Cub is because I have been taking it ro the factory.
Steve is a good guy and very knowledgeable. He is based in Graham, Texas. He would be on my list of people to call. He may know someone looking to sell. He also would know the other good cub mechanics around the country. PM him on Supercub.org.

My life is "organized" in a similarly unfortunate way. Within about a 45 day window, I have TWO airplane annuals due, TWO annual airplane insurance policies due, 6 months of hangar rent due, and (normally) the conversion of my Cub from wheels to floats. Guess when all of that occurs? Yep, you guessed it - TAX TIME!!!! I've meant to reorganize at least the insurance premium payments, but failed to follow up the last time. That's OK, the money will start flying in the proper direction any day, now. jh

Ok, I'm back in the hunt! I've done a lot of thinking as my finances recover, including some further thoughts on homebuilts. I almost traded for a 185, but my heart wouldn't let me part with the Bo. Here are some thoughts. Please shoot all of them down.
-- A homebuilt Carbon Cub EX-2 will cost over $150k and several years of building time. An EX-3 would be $180k at least, maybe up to $200k. And I'd still have to build it. They can be bought used and flying, but asking prices are higher than my estimated building prices. That might mean my estimates are low, they're super valuable airplanes, or sellers are deluded. -- Other Cubs and cubalikes are less expensive, but not a single one of them has an actual builders' manual. That's nuts. -- Looking at performance numbers, a RANS S-20, a Just Highlander, or a Kitfox S7 is pretty comparable to a Super/Carbon Cub for about half the cost and 2/3 the build time. They have the added advantage of Rotax engines, which will daintily sip E10 pump gas. They do lack the Cub je ne sais quoi, which is real. -- Resale, schmesale. That will be a problem for my heirs.
-- $150k would buy One Amazing Supercub, but I'd be afraid of scratching it if I landed in the bean fields. Overall, prices right now look stable or even down a little from last summer.
-- Huskys cost a little more than comparable Supercubs. They might not land or take off quite as short, but they're much faster. They also have a cool dog on the tail.
-- Citabria, Decathlon, modded PA-12, blah, blah, blah.....this is about Supercubs. They're like Harleys. Or Bonanzas, come to think of it!

not sure of you are looking for ultimate performance - but if not there is one on barnstormers right now that i think is a good value. It's priced a little low because it has a smallish engine. I bet it's still a good performer though. It's a homebuild so you get all the freedom to do mods that comes with that. I was going to go look at it a couple of weeks ago but i left my ipad sitting there with the ad open and my wife caught me.

Stuart, Scratch the itch. Buy the most resealable one you can afford. Patience, it’ll come along. Try it . That’s how I ended up with a Navy N3N, I was looking for a Stearman. Still having a hoot with it.
