About twenty years ago, there was a web developer in New Zealand who just might have been the most knowledgable guy in the world when it came to pulse jets. One of the things on his website was how he'd put a pretty good-sized one on go kart and got the thing up to a pretty respectable road speed (with him driving).

If you don't mind about 5× the fuel consumption, fantastically louder exhaust noise, and a service life lasting only hours then a pulse jet makes for a mean little powerplant. The engine in the V-1, famous for being loud, was reported to make 166dB (I had to look it up). That would easily drown out a Who concert. Supposedly the Space Shuttle made about 160dB in the immediate area of the launch pad...

(the model engines are a few steps down from all that)

Nice coincidence that Air & Space is featuring an article about the V-1 this month:
These Amateur Archaeologists Dig Up the Buzz Bombs That Fell on England in WW2

Two brothers scour the English countryside for remnants of Hitler’s vengeance weapons.

SpaceX really has it dialed in.

For the short time they've been at it, their progress has been remarkable.

THIS YEAR.... This very year we could see:

* SuperHeavy Launch- demo (disposed of, booo)
* SLS Launch- expensive demo (disposed of, booo)
* Falcon Heavy launch (side boosters recovery)

In the words of Flounder: Oh boy is this Great!

I agree with Flounder, but I would not 'boo' the SuperHeavy "disposal". It's a first test flight of an enormous vehicle. Similarly the Starship upper stage that it will carry. These are very likely to make iterative progress like the Falcon 9 booster and Starship upper landing tests did. You don't want them practicing their spot landing capability near people.

I suspect that Rogozin is delighted; far less wear and tear on his (parked) equipment.

Saw Christian Davenport (space reporter for the *Washington Post*) mention earlier today that the Chinese have sent 20 humans into space. SpaceX alone has sent 22. The Chinese are pretty well regarded as the second-most-capable crewed space program so the fact that SpaceX is already leading them after such a quick start is remarkable indeed.

Cal Poly SLO used to have a full size V-1 pulse jet up at the aero hangar. They'd fire it up during Cal Poly until the administration made them quit for some reason. Yeah, it was LOUD. This was mid sixties...
