Insurance on the Maule for a zero Maule time guy is usually a little higher however after 200 hours the price dropped to less than $900 a year for me On back country pilots site there is a post about Maule aircraft values and insurance prices the Cessna 180 owners with several hundred hours in aircraft have stated there insurance is higher than most Maule pilots in the same range

I bought my Maule because I could not bring my self to pay over 100 amu for a 1970 model supercub 6 years ago. I wanted an airplane that flew slow to have fun with on dirt strips and fly with the doors off or windows open. To my surprise my Maule does every thing a super cub can do and you can fill all four seats and cruise 50 mph faster than a super cub. All of this fun at a third of the supercub price. Best value for me

It is not the air tight plane that a beech bonanza is and not anywhere as fast but it sure is fun to fly slow with a door off in the summer. I take my M4 off airport to plowed fields that you would never land a tricycle geared plane in, to jeep trails on top of ridge lines and anywhere else with 350 foot of space to get airborne again

As far as difficult to fly any pilot that can keep their feet active and not fall asleep behind the yoke will keep the rudders going and plane moving in a straight line on landing however anybody that is complacent and to fast on landing runs the risk of the dreaded ground loop


Just my opinion from experience

Lets not associate poor quality with "Bubbas in Georgia". Those some "Bubbas" are the ones who build Gulfstreams, Lockheed Martins, and my personal favorite, Thrush Aircraft. All three produce world class products.

Besides, B.D. Maule was a yankee. :D

Wow what a surprising thread. My buddy has a 2001 M7-235. It's gorgeous and still looks like new (interior, exterior, everything). We've flown it from NY to Alaska and back. It handles great, carries a huge load and will land or take off anywhere - I mean anywhere. The fit and finish is as good as any other similar plane. It wasn't designed or built for luxurious long-haul - it was built to carry a big load and get in and out of tight places. We love to fly it, it's stable, balanced and never takes more than a light finger's touch. The 235 has plenty of power but I know some guys like the smaller engine since it has a higher UL.

Hi

I have owned 2 Maule’s. A M5-235 and a M7-235.

The Maule’s I had were well built and were a joy to fly.

The Maule fly’s faster than a C182 for a lot less money!

The takeoff or landing distance on a Maule makes it perfect for back country Bush flying.

The short field takeoff is incredible.

And if you are going to do a cartwheel crash, the fuselage roll cage in the Maule is excellent—you can rip the wings and tail off and not even deform the passenger compartment.

Some background info will be helpful ...a blivit is 5 pounds of s--- in a 10 pound sack. I have flown several Maules...so JGG I will fit ( somewhat like a blivit).Most recently from Mississippi to St Louis and back. A maule is not easy on the eyes. It is highly functional but reminds me of what it would be like to fly a Willis Jeep.

I started off flying Maule taildraggers and am currently on my fourth one, always thought they were very attractive in a form follows function sort of way. That being said I bought a '56 G35 two years ago and was really impressed by the handling and speed.The Maule never fails to put a smile on my face though.

A maule is basically a hotrodded super pacer. BD basically took the pacer design and extended fuselage, wings, and upgraded the powerplant to ultimately plaid proportions. If you park both airframes next to each other naked, you'll see where BD started from. The landing gear is significantly wider, and the rudder was enlarged to give the maule significantly better crosswing handling. That said, below 35MPH you're still going to be doing the brake dab-dab-dab-dab dance of any taildragger. Most have been ground looped at least once; the repairs may have been conducted by MacGuyver, or the survivors from Flight of the Phoenix which contributes to an unfounded image of poor build quality. Its a rag and tube plane with metalized wings built by a conclave of dudes who didnt get the memo that the 1930s have come and gone. Fuel caps are off of a 1976 Toyota, and the aft baggage door pins are nails. I don't know about you, but if that works I'd rather have that than Textron filling out four mortgages on my kidneys for Beechna approved axle grease. My dad got his IFR in one, and then sold it because he felt it was too pitch sensitive to fly IMC.

I owned a M6-235 for a couple years and have a couple hundred ours in one.
I loved it and wish I could have kept it when I bought the Baron.
A lot of fun to fly
A lot cheaper than a cub or husky
235 horse power
good useful load
Not fast but not slow either, you can go somewhere in one if you need to.
I flew mine to Florida from Michigan 3 or 4 times and it wasn't to bad, Baron is better for that trip but at the time that is what I had.
4 seats you can fill
I actually think they are kind of cool looking, kind of a Jeep thing you wouldn't understand thing.
I will definitely own one again
I could be wrong but I feel the couple hundred hours in that maule taildragger has made me a better pilot and has taught me some crosswind skills and crosswind respect.
I think they are good value for what you get.
I am holding out for the Wipline 3000 amphibs to get approved for the M9 and my wife to approve another airplane which probably will never happen.
Just my two cents.
