Just kidding. I think it has to do with less than stellar build quality coupled with abysmal handling traits. It did look cool stopping for beer in Cannnball run though.

Well I guess I'm a dolt. I didn't know they were ugly or poorly built or poor handling or that people sneered at them. I thought exactly the opposite.
I have flown one but it was way back in the dark ages when I was just happy to be flying anything that wasn't a C150. I remember leaping off the ground pulling full flaps and landing on very little as well. Could it be the sneers come from people who haven't flown it?

I rode in one once and found it slightly more cramped than 172 with 3 big guys up front, and there was very little leg room in the back. The only plane I have found uncramped with three big guys up front is the Twin Bonanza. I have never sneered at a maule.

I like them and we considered one. But I like Cessnas too so what do I know... I'd be interested to hear about what the terrible handling qualities are. I suspect its similar to the rumors about how "Beech V-tails fall off all the time".

As far as the handling goes, I found them to be unbalanced, sluggish, and a little heavy considering what a Maul weighs and how fast it goes. They do offer good short field performance, but that is a well served market. Don't confuse handling qualities with performance.
To be fair, I have the same opinion of an Aviat Husky...how did they take something as beautiful as a Super Cub, make it even prettier and somehow ruin the control feel, especially considering that they had tons of experience with the exceptional control feel of a Pitts?
I guess when people decide to one up Piper, they somehow end up improving performance and absolutely ruin the feel. I guess they aren't alone, in many ways, the same thing was done to the Champ.
As far as quality, go and take a look at one, preferably while it is apart getting an annual inspection. A Beechcraft it is not, heck, its not even a Piper.
I actually don't sneer at them, but I doubt I'll ever have the desire to own one.
