Dan,

Did you put new digital fuel senders for the tanks to get a better read on quantity with the EDM930? I am looking at the EDM930 for my Mooney J Model and my limited research suggested that the fuel senders needed to be replaced. Your thoughts?

Thanks.

Jud

The EDM 930 gets fuel information from two sources:

1. A fuel flow transducer to the engine which measures your actual fuel flow to the engine.
2. The fuel senders in the wings

See the attached picture:

The guage bottom right "Fuel QTY" shows what the senders have in each tank.

The one to the left of it "Est REM" is total fuel remaining calculated by the actual fuel flow over time sent through the transducer into your engine. Any time you refuel the aircraft you have to manually enter how much you refueled.

The "Est REM" is a very accurate measurement especially if you record actual refuelings over time and then calibrate your transducer's k factor setting to match reality. How to do this is in the instructions.

As for the senders, yes digital senders are more accurate and better to have. But if your current senders are functioning normally, you don't NEED to replace them. I did not replace mine. I figured I would wait until they start to go bad, and then replace them then.

I use the "Est REM" as the primary guage of how much total fuel I have and the "Fuel QTY" guage as a less accurate representation how much of the fuel is in each wing for which tank I want to select.

For example, right now (not in the picture), I have 31 gallons "Est REM". My "Fuel QTY" shows 18 in the L tank, 16 in the R which adds up to 34 gallons. Yesterday I put a stick in each tank to visually see fuel level, and I indeed have more fuel in my L tank. So I interpret this data as: I have 31 gal of fuel and my L tank has a little more of it.

If I had digital senders, they would likely indicate I had 31 better matching the "Est REM".

If the numerical incongruity really bothers you, you can turn off the numeric indication on the "Fuel QTY" and it puts smaller arrows that just indicate "R" and "L" like the photo below. It's hard to see "R" and "L" on the arrows but it's there.

Just saw your plane in a video from Premier 1 Driver who is a member here taking his jet into the same shop as yours to get painted. Your plane is painted but interior still gutted. Pops up at 1:02:23 as he's taking a tour.

P1D was in today to pickup his Premiere. He took a bunch of video of the Mooney since it was complete now. So there'll be more in his next video as well as debuting his new paint scheme.

P1D put a featurette in his new video about my Mooney. I demonstrate many of the bells and whistles of the avionics suite. Jump ahead to 37:12 to watch.
