Is the X-C copilot going public? I was just Curious; who was the lucky dog for this fun trip?

Bill Capron was the Beechtalk stud that came along. No problem on land but I hired a widgeon guru to come down next week to iron out the water. The widgeon will kill you quickly on water and I admit I need expert counsel. Lancair IV is a joke compared to a Widgeon. I respect what I don't know!

I don't remember, a little airport North of Hattiesburg with cheap gas.

I did probably 15 water landings today after work. I added a 5 gallon jug of water to the tail and started using no flaps for standing start water take offs per the advice of some gurus. No issues with porpoising. Flying this airplane safely is all about maintaining the critical attitude at all times while on the water.

I also hired the 15,000 hour guru to come down this weekend and fly with him for 3 days. I respect all airplanes but I've never had more respect for an airplane than flying a Widgeon off water. It's serious business.

This is what happens if you mess this up…scary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzRbD54L3mA

Clark County, Quitman Mississippi. Very nice airport.
The trip was a blast! Like all airplanes with character, not very comfortable, pretty darn noisy, not very fast. A lot like 2400 miles in a old 182 at twice the fuel burn.
I'd go again tomorrow!

I had a hunch that 23M might have been the airport. Good folks and cheap fuel there.

I would have happily volunteered to sleep in the back on that flight and wake up for the landing!
...but, seriously, who could sleep on such an amazing trip!?

Curious as to what kind of tow bar you will use to move the Widgeon around - can these be pulled from the tail? Or do they need a long bar that tows from the main gear? I've seen powered tugs that lift the entire tailwheel up used on T-6's, Stearmans, etc - didn't know if those would work on a Widgeon. I understand some planes shouldn't be moved by the tail wheel.

I've been tying a rope to the bow cleat or the tail tie down and using an ATV or a golf cart. But I think a stearman style towbar is in the future.

How else to arrive at the nice restaurant for dinner dressed as hobos. We had a blast.

How did your 3 days of training with the guru go? Did you fly with Chester?

I got my MES with Chester who I like but he is definitely not the guru for actual instruction in the airplane once you own one. I used Fred Ball from WA who I believe is the highest time Grumman guy still alive. He allowed us to push the limits with this airplane and can get you out of ANY bad situation with him in the right seat. We did things I'll likely never do again but it was great to learn what these wonderful Grummans are actually capable of.

My current competence level is at the private pilot level in this airplane. I learn something useful every time I fly it.
