Got some insurance quotes. There are now 2 companies in the Evo market so it's improved some. The pilot is 60, Commercial, 2,200 hours, about 2,000 of it in my A36, no turbine time, based at an airport with paved runway, tower and hangar.

After transition training:
-- Liability came in around $3K, not bad. More than my A36, of course, but considering the difference in value, time in type, and certified vs. experimental, better than I expected.
-- Full coverage, including liability of course, would be 2.8% of hull value. Higher than what I've heard for something like a Meridian but considering it's experimental and the spate of hull losses a couple of years ago, not surprising. Better than I braced myself for, actually.
-- Ground only, not in motion (again, including liability) was 1.2% of hull value. That was a surprise. On my A36 it's a few hundred bucks. But on the Evo it's over 40% of the full coverage premium. So the insurance company's judgement is that the amount of risk while sitting on the ground with the engine off is so great that unlimited flying would only add a little more than that much risk again. Wow. I think that's testimony to the impact of the nose gear collapses under tow. Individually, they've not been as expensive as the in-flight losses that get all the publicity but there've been enough of them that they add up.

Dave-
The underwriting market for Evo's is pretty much Great American and IAT. Those two markets have been underwriting this class of aircraft for at least the last 6 months (in the case of IAT who is a relatively new underwriting market). The underwriting market for Evo's pretty much mirrors the market for the Epic - generally just IAT and Great American. There are always exceptions but those two carriers have supported the experimental turbine market pretty much since their inception.

Dave, thanks for posting that, sounds like not much has improved in coverage in the past two years

This is the primary factor in me not pursuing an Evo, to contrast it I’m getting quotes for a king air 90 in the 7-8k range for full coverage with 1mm smooth

Painting finished, we'll bring it back to the shop, let the paint cure for a while then put it all together.

Dave, does this mean full coverage is in the ~$25K range annually? Nice looking bird.

Ok, I’ve got to ask. I’ve got the VH figured out but 143?

Yes, depending of course on the usual variables: stated value, limits, your experience, etc. Rates jumped a year or two back when mergers narrowed the market down to just one company that would cover the Evo but it was short lived, they started back down when a second company entered the market. I'd like them even lower, of course. :)

It's been a longer road than I expected but it could be worse. A proud builder reported the first flight of his Evo this week after 7 years, 8 months of construction. I believe he is one of those few, intrepid souls who chose to go it alone, with no build shop assistance.
