Before making my first solo flight I got several hours in the left seat of a similar plane with a former Marine test pilot in the right seat. Prior to that, I got six hours in the right seat of an identical aircraft - even some actual IFR. Also, I did a number of fast taxi tests, so I felt pretty confident that I wouldn't die on the first couple of flights.
But Dave’s propeller investment likely exceeds your airframe cost, and Darwin aside, I’m certain insurance is a large factor in all decisions made when launching a new Evo with $500-600k firewall forward
Your lancair flight was likely not insured in the first phase, so the only consideration you had to cover was life insurance which may or may not have been a factor depending on your situation
In either scenario the Evolution fleet cannot suffer another hull loss, so Dave is approaching this from the right mindset anyway you look at it
Bravo Dave and best of luck, we are all rooting for you

Sorry, but I flew my Lancair myself on it's first flight. Personally, I find comments such as this to be... disappointing. Similar to making to mocking a pilot for choosing not to launch into marginal weather. This is serious business and there is no place for criticizing another pilot for their decisions. I had a test pilot make the first flight on my airplane. I guess I'm just a sissy.

I found it humorous, not a criticism of the pilot. Lighten up guys!

Tom T recently made much the same point, that 99% of flights arrive safely, yet we focus 99% on criticizing those few decisions that end badly, and ignore -- or, as in this case, make fun of -- the many decisions that avoid tragedy.

Username Protected wrote: My ego isn't on the line here. Sexual analogies are emotive but treating a control stick as a phallic symbol has gotten a lot of pilots killed over the years. The NTSB found that 20% of all homebuilt accidents occurred on the first or second flight, the majority due to pilot error. I find that data compelling, as does my insurance company. We agreed that a Test Pilot School graduate, aerobatics competitor and Reno race pilot who's been instructing in Evolutions for years and done over a dozen first flights was much better qualified for this job than I am.
As I said before, this ain't the Raptor project. Your test pilot is well qualified for the job. He did my acro checkout and Pitts transition training as well as ferried the airplane for me across the US out to Oregon. We did a lot of inverted flat spins, and explored the edge of the aircraft envelope and my physical G tolerance, while he repeated the mantra of recovery to me. This turned out to be invaluable, as a few months later I was giving a ride to a friend and got slow and uncoordinated while inverted......bam, we were in an inverted flat spin. The stick just flopped back and forth in my hand with no aerodynamic pressure, it felt like a control check on the ground. I thought I was giving opposite rudder, but it didn't do anything, and then I doubted which rudder I needed to give and which way we were spinning. It was only a couple of turns, but a lot went through my mind in that few seconds, including looking at the canopy eject knob and thinking "glad we briefed a bail out, is this really happening"? And then my training kicked in, and the mantra of recovery that had been literally beat into me by a professional, came back and I realized I was missing the first step of the recovery......pull the power! Bam, the nose dropped and the airplane started flying again. On one reposition flight before I was checked out in the Pitts, he brought an Evo over to pick me up and let me fly in back. What machine! There is a reason that professionals exist, in all forms of our daily lives. They know the corners of the envelope, that don't necessarily make themselves obvious. If my life and a project I had put uncountable hours/resources in was on the line, I'd be hiring a professional in that area also. Congrats Dave on your progress, we are all cheering you on! Brent
