I don't have any pictures of that area, it's all done at the factory before the builder shows up. I'll take some but I don't expect them to show much, the windshield (1/2" thick, btw) is much bigger than the opening in the fuselage and the edges are encased front and back in a big C-section flange of 12 layers of carbon. Wicked strong. From what I can see in the pictures, it appears the failure was of the plexiglass, rather than the carbon or the bond; the carbon perimeter looks undistorted and some of the plexiglass is reported still attached on the copilot's side.

Beats me. Where I said "plexiglass", please substitute "some kind of clear plastic glass like substance". One of those things I haven't yet needed to know, I haven't done anything with it, still has the protective film on it.

Is it true that the piston Evo weighs more than a TN-36? That's pretty interesting.

Depends. It's really too soon to say, there aren't enough of them flying yet to give a good weight estimate. The factory gives the "design empty weight" as 2650 lbs., about 500 lbs. lighter than a Mirage with basically the same Lycoming. But that's the same number they give for the turbine(s) with a much lighter PT6. Add 80 lbs. if you want the parachute, and of course everyone customizes. Homebuilts of all kinds seem to gain weight compared to the lightweight factory prototype/demonstrator. Turbine Evos I looked at varied in empty weights by almost 200 lb., no reason the pistons should be any different once there are enough out there to compare. Keep in mind, although the piston has less stress from lower pressurization, power and speeds, it's still the identical airframe as the turbine so it's probably overbuilt for the piston.

Thanks for the great info and fun thread; I do hear that insurance is an issue for the Evos - I wonder if the piston would be easier to insure for a lower time pilot that doesn't otherwise have any turbine time... have you investigated the insurance market for your Evo?

On the other hand, the piston and its engine are new, with no track record and a smaller pool. Beats me how that balances out.

Insurance was a topic at an Evo Fly-In in May. Excerpted takeaways:
"Quotes are subject to a lot of variables with a key variable dominating - experience in general and in similar type. The swing in hull quotes is large - $1.10 to $2.60 per $100. The actual quote includes variables such as level of individual items, deductible and ... (under $4,000 most likely) Liability....Expect a requirement of 1,000 total hours plus 200 to 250 hours in Retractable... Standard requirements are Instrument Rating required, Annual Recurrent Training required....Unlikely will quote if a claim is on record."

Dave - thanks for sharing your experience. Dream plane for me.

Has Evolution said anything to owners about the windshield failure incident? Would have to imagine owners/builders a bit concerned there.

From what I understand, this single event turns out to be the fault of the "builder" in that he choose to paint the aircraft black. The thermal stresses caused by the excessive heat load due to the black color resulted in the failure of the acrylic windscreen. It's a one off problem that can be solved by simply painting the aircraft white. White is the only approved color but since it's not a certified aircraft, the owner can do as they please.

Think about the plane baking in the sun with the carbon fiber absorbing a huge amount of heat and the skin temperature probably above 100C. The windscreen, being clear, would absorb very little energy and stay relatively cool. Consider the stress where the windscreen bonds with the carbon fiber fuselage. Then zoom the plane up to the flight levels where it's way below zero. Ouch! Talk about thermal stress! Do that a few times and the acrylic would start to develop microcracks and eventually shatter.

What is the source of this speculation? I hadn't heard that the factory or NTSB has said anything about cause.

There is already a thread on this in Crash Talk. This discussion belongs there.

Not electrically, just hot air vents and a TKS spray bar for de-ice.

Good enough for me, I still want one :D
