I have been operating fixed wing for 40 some years and rotorcraft for approx. 10. I have a real use for rotorcraft because I am in the ag. business and it makes my day much more productive. I can see more in a couple hours in a helicopter than I can all day in a truck or on a horse. I use an r-22 because it is economical and its small size and speed, about 95 per cent of the time I am in it solo so performance is very good I also self insure. I don't think anymore about using it than I do getting in my truck because of the economy. But it does demand staying within the flight envelope, as it is very unforgiving. The 44 is a better machine, much more docile and a very capable machine even compared to a couple of turbine machines, if I needed to carry passengers a lot I would be in a 44 or MD 500, but than I would have to watch my usage because of the cycles on the turbine in the 500.
As with any aircraft it really needs to fit the job but especially with a helicopter. If you have the need, desire and a good operating area there is nothing like a helicopter.
If you forget about the expermental birds you will probably kill yourself before the machine will.
As with any aircraft, your instructor is very important, maybe more so with rotorcraft, just the nature of the beast.

Sincerely
Rawl Overstreet

Also a fan of Philip's blogs, keep them coming. Agree with Jeff that R44's are truly a great machine. I fly mostly in the rocky mountains which are only 10 minutes from my ranch. I routinely land with four people at 7000 feet plus. The machine is extremely reliable, seldom breaks down, cheap annuals - and so much fun to fly! It's not the best in high mountain winds (over 20knts), but to step up to an Astar 350 is a big jump.

The 12 yr rule is something that needs to be changed (Robinson would sell a lot more choppers if they would relax this for private owners) but I know several private owners that work around it.

All in all, a great machine that is easy to fly, fast, cheap to run and very useful- I use it regularly to check and round up cattle - much quicker than using my horse (although I'm not sure he would agree with that last statement).
