The wings and tail surfaces are about 40% smaller than the ES, some have found them to be flying coffins

Not all are built equal and not all are flown equal

About seven years ago, a friend finished a beautiful Lancair ES. About a year later, he passed away. The family asked me to sell the airplane for them, which I did. The sale required that I fly the remaining hours off on the airplane (~15), and then deliver it.

I had no experience in the Lancair ES. The prebuy was done by a gentleman that runs a builders assistance program, and had built ~40 Lancairs. I discussed flying it with him and he said the following: "It's as gentle as a 172. If it was a Lancair IV, I'd tell you not to touch it without experience in the airplane. It's an ES, which is the one airplane I'll tell you to jump in it and go fly."

He was right, it was a beautiful flying airplane. I have about 20 hours in that airplane, and enjoyed it. I did have two complaints about the design. The aircraft was difficult to climb up on the wing, and it was difficult to climb in the front seats without stepping on the seat.

I enjoyed the time I had in the airplane. It's a heck of a performer, with the first flight being out of a 1200' grass runway! Seems like it cruised around 200 KTAS at 7000'. It has the IO-550R for power.

If I am reading the right specs, the IV has a wing area of 98 sqft compared to 140 for the ES. That would indicate a whole, different wing, with the small IV wing optimized for cruise at high speed. For a comparison, both my Bonanza and Piper Archer had about 181 sqft .

I can echo this. Pretty much sums up my experience as an instructor in the right seat coming home from Oshkosh with a rusty owner.

I emailed the new owners of Lancair last night to see if they were going to start producing the ES & ESP again.

I will let you know if & How they reply.

Good looking airplane, very good looking. The Evolution is a great airplane too, just a little more bulbous (if that's a word). The ES has almost perfect lines IMHO

Lancair will NOT be bringing back the ES or ESP.

Instead they are pinning their hopes on a new model, the MAKO, which has a retractable nose gear only.

They will still produce the Legacy.

It looks like the Mako is an evolution of the ES and the retractable nose gear is optional...

Why is the nose gear retractable?
Retractable nose gear is offered as an option, to improve performance. We expect another 7 to 8 knots of cruise speed with the nose gear tucked away. We are also working on this operation being automatic, based on speed and GPS altitude.

I can live with it being optional. An option that I cant imagine anyone getting. Having two doors and lycoming power is a nice...

What's the point of only having the nose gear retract? If you are going to the trouble, make them all come up.

I'm building a remote-controlled CNC machine that cuts foam cores if anyone has the drawings for the ES/IV and wants to get cores?

Maybe it's just me, but the Mako is Fugly. Engineering be d@#med.

If they were going to go that direction, they should have just gone to conventional gear.

It's not like insurance will be cheaper, right? There is still the possibility of a "gear up" landing which will certainly do more damage to the engine and firewall than if a normal retract had a gear up.

Yes, it might be easier to taxi. But it's Fugly.

Yeah, it's kinda oddball.

On one hand the nose gear is the only one in the propeller slipstream and it carries much less weight than the mains (so less structure and less weight to make it retract). On the other hand, it's the only one that steers, so that's extra mechanical complexity- and $$
