dumb question - anyone have any good ideas on how to remove a light oily smell from the interior of a plane? It is pretty light, but it is annoying. I have cleaned the seats with standard auto cleaners but am thinking I might need to shampoo the carpets. Any product recommendations?

Pilatus makes a really good product. From what I've heard it doesn't stink.
Lucky for you, at 316KTAS you don't have to smell it for very long?

Are you sure it's in the seats and carpet and not under the floor?

Coffee. I've seen dealers leave open cans in the airplane and I've seen it sprinkled on the carpet left overnight and then vacuumed up.

^ this ^ and BION, newspaper.

My bird had the original interior, and the 'airplane' smell completely permeated everything - carpet, floorboards, insulation, seat cushion, everything.

Anthony,

We placed a couple sheets of Bounty fabric sheets on the hat shelf in our MU-2. That took care of the smell. Also have your ACM Conditioned air Outlet checked and the amount of oil in the ACM unit. If it's over serviced the cabin will occasionally have a slight oil smell.

Regards,
Nigel

Carpet.

It's an easy DIY job with burn certs and an A&P.
Makes for a new world.

We even had them stitch in a flap to easily access the Travel Nut area.

Yes. Excellent suggestion. Burn certs not required for our beech CAR-3 cert basis aircraft. Match test and logbook entry sufficient. All modern carpets meet national flammability standards. So go find some, cut with an electric hot knife, find a local shop with a surging machine and Bob's your uncle.

Ok, this is interesting. Is it possible just buy a pre-certified carpet roll, cut to the existing shapes, surge the ends and reinstall? That sounds really simple, and cheap.

I have never removed airplane carpets, I assumed there was some glueing involved - is that not the case? The carpet is far and away the weakest link in my interior. Would love to replace it.

Find any carpet you like and send a sample for a burn cert. Sandia does it for not much money. Odds are it will pass.

Skandia I think you mean. They are incredibly inexpensive and fast.
