Marines are taught to go over the obstruction, around or under. Last resort is to use your head to blast thru the wall. Even though it is most effective and gets the fastest result!

Someone mentioned this thread in the new Mustang vs Phenom thread... I came over here and it was like going home. I loved this thread, miss it!

Michael,

This is a real question. Why are you trading a C2 for an 850? Was it for improved avionics, timed out engine, interior........?

My C2 does 300kts cruise at 300 but the engine is pretty fresh and the seat fits my butt. I am not sure that I would endure the loss on the transaction for +-30 more knots.

I see people doing this but have not had the logic explained.

I had 3100 hours on the engine. Loved the plane. Reached a point was it worth putting the money into an OH or go with a new bird. We dicided to upgrade to a G1000 850. On the C2 I had dual GTN 750's with a G600. In all honesty some of that set up I liked better.
But...the 700 autopilot is a awesome. My C2 TAS was 295 +. In the 850 we see about
310. Climb is a little better in the 850.

I do not have a pilot door in the 850. We had one in the C2. I do miss the pilots door.

Thanks, that makes sense. Ive got about 2400 but the old owner just about rebuilt the engine at 2100 after he hit a taxi light.

GTN/G600 package is awesome. I've have as well but no pilot door.

I went from a 2003 C2 to a 2013 850G.
The 850 climbs better, is faster 310-315.
Pilot door, G1000 with GFC700 a/p.
Bigger front bagage, better a/c. Elite seating.
Starts cooler and climbs cooler.
TBMs just keeps getting better.

Interesting thread. I went the opposite direction with a 700B and overhauled it last October. We already have over 200 hours on the motor and I'm married to this airplane for probably a year or two until I get a few hundred more hours of use out of it. Selling the C2 when you did was the deadline in my view and I'm sure you got a great price out of it, especially with the panel.

The 700 autopilot is exactly the defining difference for me as well about a move up. Huge difference besides the fact I have to deal with more useful load issues.

When I bought the airplane in the spring of 2014 with 2850 hours on it, I researched OH costs and at that time expected $350,000. It was quite a bit higher than that, I can tell you, as Pratt went through many price increases since then plus we had a couple of surprises in spite of all the due diligence (imagine that). Personally to me, it seems Pratt is trying to poke everyone for all they can until GE comes to market. What do you bet if that happens, Pratt starts a huge discount, price savings program?

Once you have an airplane at TBO, in my opinion, you are in a corner from a resale perspective looking for a buyer who wants something like that. You can bet that buyer knowing he'll have downtime, uncertainty and expense won't be the retail type. To me, the last 500 before TBO aren't very valuable to a buyer or the marketplace based on my experience. Conversely it seems the first 500 hours of a new motor won't cost the seller much in resale.

I hope to get those hours of use out if this 700B and maybe go 850, Pilatus (we're starting to need the room) or if I get emotional in my decision, JET, before I start riding in the back.

Overall, TBM is super tough to beat for speed, fuel and utility. There isn't anything close out there especially if you don't need the seats.

You nailed it! One of the niches that you can exploit in almost every model of airplane, buy it with less than 1000 to go to overhaul, for the run-out value, and then do the motor. You have some expense and hassle but it's offset by the fact that somewhere in there you flew 1000 hours for a very low engine cost factor. The last 500 and first 500 are in a way free! Or at least they offset the huge cost of overhaul.
