I know that most, if not all Lears are on a calendar based inspection program. That is rough on low utilization owners. The 12 year can easily run $275k - $350k. If they were on an hours based program, I would be buying a Lear 60.

I have 15 years experience with Lear 60s, my experience is the 12 year is usually about 1/2 as much on a well maintained aircraft.
Learjet has been pushing a program for the 60 that changes the inspection program to more of an hourly based program instead of calendar. You have to pay in a chunk of $$ and they evaluate your aircraft and design an inspection schedule that transitions your particular aircraft onto the new system.
If you have the money for a 60 but are afraid of the maintenance, why not put it on a charter certificate and fly the wheels off it while you aren't using it? Won't pay for all the expenses but it will certainly defray them in a huge way.

I've flown one of the last 45's built for three years. It's been the most unreliable, most maintenance intensive jet I've ever flown. Three engine removals in 1200 hrs and most Every system has been a problem. Runway performance (Takeoff) leaves a lot to be desired. Bombardier Customer Service is poor. The only redeeming quality is it flies nice. Get a Citation Excel, much better airplane. Dave

David:
I'm sorry to hear about your 45. Been flying Lears for over 30 years and yours is the exception, not the rule.
Our 60 has missed 3 trips in 16 years. I can't imagine a more reliable aircraft. Awesome performance too. We can take off from 5000 ft runways at sea level and fly 4 hours with IFR reserves. Never 2nd segment limited for take off, and cruise at .78 all day at FL410 at 1200 lbs per hour.
We perform maintenance every 6 months with few squawks. All systems have been very reliable since new. It's an awesome aircraft and fun to fly.

I'd have to agree with nearly all of David's comments.
I worked for an airline school with four Lear 45's - on a good day three would be serviceable, often it was worse than that. The support from Bombardier was very poor indeed, they seem totally disinterested.
The one comment I'd challenge was about the handling - I thought it very heavy and unresponsive on the controls, much worse than any airline aircraft I've flown.
Great performance though!

I'm glad that I flew them when a Lear was a Lear. We had few problems and great service out of our 31. But that was then... Where has the time gone!?!?!?

I have talked to 45 and 60 operators. From what I was told, I think the Lear 60 has much higher dispatch reliability.

I said it flies nice, not great, but the other two airplanes I fly are Challenger 300's and they fly terrible. At least the controls, though heavy, actually work Dave
