Gerry, I had a friend that built one and it is a marvelous airplane. I have thought numerous times about building one. It fits our mission to a T. Username Protected wrote: As some of you may remember I used to own a B36T Rocket Turboprop. Wonderful airplane but had to sell because others that owned it with me wanted to move on. I have been searching and thinking about what my new plane would be and concluded that I am going to build a 2015 Lancair Evolution. I'm very excited about my new plane! From everything I have been researching by choosing the -42 engine package I will be able to fly 305KTAS on 40gph. I'm bummed it's only 4 seats but that appears to be the biggest compromise.

My biggest issue is NO ice protection. Have they fixed this? Thank you! No I don't think that's true. Pretty sure they have always had the heated wing and now they have boots. Now if you are referring to no FIKI then that's true, but I'm pretty sure that you cannot have FIKI on an experimental.

That's terrific, Gerry. Keep us updated on the process (pictures are good!) And if you haven't yet, I'd suggest signing up at LancairTalk, http://lancairtalk.net/ Lots to learn there. Dave VH

Just curious, why the -42 and not the -135A? The latter is lighter in weight; would you not get the same speed at a lesser FF? Is the -135A more expensive?

The -135A is inferior in every respect. Yes the -42 is heavier but that is why an MT composite propeller is used to offset most of the weight gain. The -42 allows the plane to fly close to 320 KTAS which is the speed the airplane was originally intended to fly when designed. The -135A can come close to flying 300 KTAS, however you cannot sustain those speeds unless you want to burn out your engine. The -135A can only comfortably fly 285 KTAS at about an ITT of 720-740 where as the -42 can fly the same 285 KTAS at 660 ITT AND burn less fuel than the -135A. YES, it burns less fuel than the smaller -135A when flying the same speeds. If you want to push the ITT on the -42 to about 720-740 then you can reach that 315-320 KTAS.
The -135A is much more expensive and I'm talking a minimum of about $100,000 more. The -42 can allow for an initial climb of 5,000 ft/min. I do not know how long you can sustain that ROC however.
So to recap the -42 is:
-cheaper -flies faster -burns less fuel at same airspeeds -maintains the same/similar weight and balance with the MT propeller -more aerodynamic -better looking cowl (IMO)

Username Protected wrote: We have a Lancair Evo in our hangar right now. It is stunningly beautiful. It has heated leading edges. They are good looking aren't they? I love the fact that I'm going to get to pick out all the colors and customize it to my tastes! I also plan to get the heated leading edge for my de-ice. From what I understand it works really well and if installed properly there is a much less speed penalty with those vs the boots.
