The Boeing 737 MAX. First flight is this Friday at 10am (weather permitting).

I'll be at my hangar at KRNT cheering it aloft.

Amazing that this airplane is in its 4th generation and the tube has been flying since the 60s! At least this one is easy to tell from the others with the zig zag engine cowels.

Why Boeing won't stretch the cockpit by a mere six to ten inches is beyond me.

Another few inches of seat travel would make the ole relic at least tolerable.

The best band-aid fix would be the 757 nose pop riveted on the pointy end but if wishes were horses beggars would ride.

Thought they were the same as the -9's.

The engine design was brought over from the 787 which has proven to have some engine efficient advantages.

:coffee:

Amen to that.

I suppose that only 737 drivers and jumpseaters truly understand.

I commute each week from SAN to LAS for work.

We at Southwest feel it is the best airframe in the sky. But it is not without its quirks.

We look forward to having the MAX on property at the end of the year.

The zig-zags are chevrons on the trailing edge of the thrust reverser outer sleeve for noise reduction. Boeing started studying and experimenting with them in the late 90's, and they finally made it onto a production design with the 787 and now the 737 Max. I was involved with one of the experiments that actually had flexible chevrons that could be driven into the exhaust stream for maximum noise reduction during takeoff, and then relaxed out of the way for cruise (for greater fuel efficiency). We were working towards an autonomous "control" system that would react to heat of the exhaust stream and then relax as the heat decreased at cruise using shape memory alloys. Really fun project! In the end, though, the flying ones are static with a compromised position.

You got that right. Climbing in and out of the seat was a real pain. Banged my shin repeatedly. Was amazed when the new series came out they did nothing to improve the cockpit. Hope at least they fixed the packs so they will put out cold air on the ground. Used to sweat a lot on the ground in the 300 series.

First take-off is already on YouTube. Airplane is currently in flight.

The flight deck may not be roomier than before, but it's a giant step forward in terms of avionics and cockpit displays.

When they gonna re-design the 727 windows and nose? It's looking a little long in the tooth with those flat windows with mullions when everyone else rocks curved windows. Learjet had them in the 60's.

A gajillion things. Engines, landing gear, aerodynamics (look at the tailcone for example), winglets, avionics, etc....

It's quite extensive.

I always thought the 727/737 nose was THE look for airliners, like a visual trademark.

This was a first flight? In that weather? Did they have to file?
