Hello all,

Last week the plane I was riding in tried to give us a one way trip. :bat: The starter on the cessna 185 quit cranking after a couple of turns. We called a mechanic and a "rescue pilot" and after a second starter would not do the trick the rescue pilot decided we should try to use a rope! The owner of the plane said he had seen it done with a DC-3 and a pickup truck many years ago.
I decided to get the camera out to witness something I had not seen before!

Rgs,
Patrick

A C185 is easy to hand prop, just saying.

I'm thinking cracked spinner back plate.

I wonder what happens if the rope doesn't come free.

Then there is the Huck starter:

(Shuttleworth Hind)

I have a picture somewhere of them hand starting the Bristol Fighter. There are two guys, the little guy hangs on the prop while the big guy pulls on the little guy. Never saw doubles hand propping before. I think it was best to be the big guy.

I was told the starter adapter plate was the problem.

It was important for the rope to be long enough to be cleared of the prop and what they did was tie a knot on the tip of the rope and just lay it on the spinner and press it with the same rope as it wound up. The pilot who was in charge of the start up was pretty clear to let go the rope and not wrap it around your hand!

That's what I was thinking most. Ropes have a way of accidentally tangling on all sorts of things.

I don't ever plan to do that myself but it was interesting to see it done "just in case".

Once maybe, but I question what kind of side loads you are putting on both the engine mounts and the firewall by doing this repeatedly.

The crop duster link looks like they are rather proficient at doing this.
