Cessna 404 - unpressurized, 421 engines, 441 body.

4 of them just went for sale on Controller from a freight outfit. (Which, along with Cape Air type operations, were common operators.)

If you like Queen Air/Twin Bo/Chieftain type BIG comfortable planes, these seem like a neat option. 350ish gallon fuel capacity - so if you're looking for long range that might work.

way too many nights of my college years wasted in those things. I hope to never see one again.

I have yet to meet anyone who would say "hope to never see one again" in that case

Better yet, F406. 404 with PT6.

There's a project to bring them back, this time with a diesel engine option:

Why no love for the Titan? I have fond memories of the 404.

The Cessna 404 is a great airplane. It's a flying bus or truck, depending on how you have it configured.
I've not seen any other piston airplane that could carry ice the way a 404 could. I remember stuffing 2500+ pounds of boxes (legally) in it on a daily basis. I took nine of my friends to Oshkosh in one once. It wasn't exceptionally fast (170 KTAS at 8000'), but was a real workhorse. The crew door meant that it could be loaded (with cargo or passengers) and then the pilot could enter through the crew door. It was very easy to fly..

Based by the total times of the 10 listed on Controller, they are an unreplaceable airplane. I have many hours flying (and training pilots to fly in) the highest time one listed there with a previous operator. We had 14 at that time.

There are a few low time corporate models out there, but most have been converted for cargo use..

Jason

I looked at the listings on Controller. I guess no one actually wants to sell a plane.

No prices listed.

Back around 1979-80 Tilford, or Beckett Tilford had one. Before they could get it on their certificate it was stolen....twice. Dopers used it and abandoned it. I guess that is a validation of good range and payload. :duck:

That is really annoying... and results in fewer, or no, inquiries.

Agreed.

Any broker/seller who doesn't list an asking price is basically saying they don't care if they waste other people's time. Either that, or they don't know their market.

I never call "call for price" listings. Those planes are basically not really for sale and are bait to collect your info for brokers to pester you.

In this case there were five 404's from one cargo op from NM put up for sale at once. Whatever you think about the propriety of "call for price" listings ... I don't think this is a bait scheme with planes not really for sale.

Planes really for sale have a price listed.

That's been my experience.

Yea when I take over you can't list a plane unless you list an asking price.
