Thanks guys. I am excited.

Robert. Yes it’s at Juan’s. I can’t wait to see her. Hoping to pick it up this weekend.

Mike

I own a T310R and have started thinking about an upgrade to a 414A or 421B or C. At this point I have read up to page 5 of this discussion, copying and pasting a tidbit here and there and will finish it all up soon. Great discussion.
I operate out of a 3500' strip at 1200' MSL. What is your comfort level for a 400 series for take offs/landings?
Thanks, now I can go back and pick up where I left off.

You NEED to speak with Doug Jackson.

I'm a fairly new 421C pillot. I purchased my plane in Jan of 2018 and put about 150 hours on her since then. I stuck with 4000 feet for the first 100 hours as I was getting used to the plane although I don't think I ever used more than 3000. Manage your weight and airspeed on final and you will be fine with 3000 or even 2500. The 400 series are amazing airplanes, you will not be sorry with your decision to upgrade. Good luck.

Anthony

The runways are my home airport are 3500' and 2500' at 936' MSL. Went out of the 2500' runway in my neighbors 340A the other day. 3 adults and half tanks...I was quite comfortable with the amount of runway left at rotation. In addition we weren't full throttle prior to brake release. There are Navajo/340/414/421 based here and I've even seen a Duke.

I think the 421 is where you should look. If you have ruled out the 340 (I had mine for four years and absolutely loved it) the 421 will have a better power to weight ratio than the 414. And it’s quieter.

I bought a 421C last year and now have 125 hrs in it. I came from 2000hrs of B58 ownership. It’s a different beast. The pressurized cabin and slow turning props make 600 nm trips seem like a drive to the corner store for snacks.
It needs to be trimmed and re-trimmed as you pass through each phase of flight and needs to be flown by the numbers. I have trailing link gear that makes every landing feel like a “greaser”

It’s big and holds lots of stuff. It won’t fit in even a big tee hanger.
Fuel burn is an eye opener at 80+ gals at TO, 42 gals in cruise. I can load up 270 gals and do 1,000 trips

I’m pretty comfortable with 3,000’ strips but feel safer with 3,500’ ( I also used 4,000’minimum for the first 50 hrs or so)

I thought a long time about a TP but I think I can do better with the 421.

Call anytime to hear more

Regards

AB

At certain power settings “inside the box” I can run my 421C at peak.
For example at 15,500 at 31”/1700RPM will be 200kts on 36 GPH. 1550 TIT’s.
I have Gami injectors and they are balanced from .2 to .4 tenths of gallon from each other.

Uh, who is Doug Jackson? The airport is Carroll County Airport, 4m1. It is in NW Arkansas.

Doug is a frequent BTer who flies the second nicest 340 I’ve ever seen.
He’s extremely knowledgable on twin Cessnas. I guess several guys in here are as well.

Gerald, we took delivery of a 1982 421C in August and have been flying it on longer trips when the Bo isn’t as comfortable. I can’t find any reference numbers for TIT or CHT in the book. What are your typical numbers for your trips? Love the 421 so far but it sure likes its gas

Look in the POH under power settings and Altitude, you will see a black line around certain power settings , that’s the box. Read the fine print at the top.
It’s a good idea to have balanced fuel injectors from Gami.
