The plane is meant to be flown as a fighter in short hops. Forget IFR + reserves. You are into reserves when the wheels leave the ground.

To give a perspective: The horizontal stab of an F-14 is larger than a Mig-21's wing!

Privett has a matched set, mig15 and an F86. The sabre is a work of art while the mig seems to have been built to fight a 100-hour-long war and then be scrapped. It's amazing to me that anyone can keep these old mig's running. You couldn't pay me enough to fly that thing again. The sabre though, it's a pussycat. Anyone on this list could fly it, comfortably so.

Don, Is everything alright? This thread doesn't meet the BT Peddler Talk rules!
We need you to keep this place under control or it will result in BT anarchy.

If anyone had the skills to not get himself killed in it then he probably did, 25-30 years in the Navy and flying pointy nose for much of that time. He worked up to high speed taxi (even lit the burner... briefly... 8000' runway). Alas, before he had it ready to fly, he and another guy from the chapter (retired USAF) were killed in an Emeraude crash that the NTSB attributed to inadequate use of carb heat (left a lot of us scratching our heads). Gravity and physics are not impressed by flying hours, type ratings, leather jackets or cool flying stories.

Soviet aircraft of this era don't posess the same aerodynamics as Western aircraft. Stalls can be sudden and violent. Engine TBO's are a fraction of western TBO's. That said properly flown their small size, speed and maneuverability made them worthy dog fighters. These are ruggedly built although crude by our standards. Suspect parts are available since so many were produced.

I saw one once at night. Was a real pretty fireball after being taken out by an F-4's AIM-7 (not mine). We had it on radar from wheels in the well until splash. Yes the Russian Captain was correct. Mig-21's will kill you - one way or another.
