Called these folks and they fixed problem Tuesday AM.

My Aluminum Mistress AKA My aerostar has once again thrown a tantrum and canceled a flight. This time its the turbo controller....(4th one in ~600 hours)
(I know its the turbo controller because I spent Saturday after noon swapping them left/right and problem followed the controller)

I've been getting my replacements from the flight shop where I suspect they have
been sitting on the shelf for a long time with the diaphragms drying out.
going to try a different source. Its a 601P so Mine has a RAJAY PN, not the modified Machen version that costs so much more to overhaul.

MU2 never stranded you or had to cancel a mission. Very reliable & fast turbo prop. Can't say the same for the 601P.

130hrs in my 601P in the last 12 months and it’s never stranded me. I had an Aerostar shop (The Flight Shop) do my annual and put new engines on last winter, one of the best moves I’ve ever made. I won’t take the airplane to anyone but an aerostar specialty shop now for the annual (this is the least expensive way to do it too…) You’re going to have some drama if you take it to your local mechanic for big jobs.

Mechanics that don’t like the aerostar are lazy or hidebound and the pilots that say they are dangerous have never flown or had training in them. It’s one of the best light twins ever made and every time I fly it I’m blown away they didn’t become more popular, Ted smith made a hell of an airplane. If you look at his single engine aerostar he designed in the 70s (maybe 60s), it looks exactly like a cirrus.

If you took your MU2 to the “local mechanic” I’m sure you would have some drama too, sometimes when you get into turbines you also get an airplane that has been properly cared for, not neglected and the bare minimum work performed by the cheapest guy for years.

They guy south of Cleveland, OH worked on the 601 Was supposed to be the best in the country . Put several wrong pats on it & is out of business .

We each have our experiences. The worst service I ever received from an aircraft maintenance shops were both "specialty" shops. One for the Mooney Bravo and the other on the 601P.

I'm not saying that there are not good "specialty" shops, just that there are lots of very competent mechanics who work on lots of airplanes.

Actually if you take your MU2 to a local mechanic you would find he could call Intercontinental Jet in Tulsa and get all the information needed to diagnose and fix things properly. We found a small crack in a stringer during an avionics upgrade where in the past someone had drilled a hole where it shouldn't have been. One phone call and sending pictures of the crack resulted in how to repair it along with an electronic copy of the needed documentation (Mitsubishi Structural Repair Manual) for my local shop, all with NO charge. MU2s might be older, but they are very well supported. Mitsubishi owns Intercontinental Jet. My one on the road issue with my landing gear happened when I happened to be in Kansas, so I detoured to Intercontinental Jet in Tulsa. They got right on the problem that day, got the gear rigged properly and I was on my way the next day. I can't say enough good things about how well these airplanes are supported which is amazing since the last ones were made in 1986. I just got done with a 600 hour inspection which involves removing the flaps and checking all the jack screws and nuts as well as flow checking the fuel nozzles (need to remove the engines to do this which only takes an hour) all of which took 3 weeks and cost $15,200. I have owned this plane for 2 1/2 years and spent $37K in parts and maintenance total, and except for the gear issue, all of that was scheduled inspections. That figure does not include avionics upgrades. The plane is a beast, it just works and since it is an F model, my fuel burn is under 70gph since I purchased it, and on long legs I can have fuel burns of under 60gph takeoff to touchdown. I find this expense quite reasonable for a twin engine turboprop considering the performance and comfort you get for the money.

The service I received on the MU2 was next level , they always drilled down & fixed the problem . Last shop I dealt with the owner owned a MU2 & that was the very best service received.

The only problem is the MU2 doesn’t even come close to looking, or, dancing like an Aerostar. More like Bertha Butt one of the Butt sisters.
