So I'm thinking of going LSA ... I found a very, very clean example of the breed. Almost too clean. <g>

I opened the cowl ... and the first thing I notice is that the ignition leads have to make a VERY HARD 90-degree turn as they exit the mag. And that they firmly rub against the firewall. For me, this really chills my interest.

Question #1:

Is this "normal" for this STC?

Question #2:

Thinking about a Field Approval to: Cut two holes in the firewall and inserting cups/dimples so that the ignition leads don't rub? My guess is: Slim chance. Or; fat chance. Not really a difference, eh?

Question #4:

Anyone ever seen right-angle ignition lead adapters?

I would check to be sure the conversion was done in accordance with the STC. The one I am familiar with is the Buzz Wagner STC. It also covers the Lyc. o -235 conversion and I am doing one of these now. It calls for a new engine mount and a longer cowl has to be fabricated. I think this is the same on the Cont. conversion.
possibly someone used the original 65 horse engine mount. My o-235 conversion has plentu of room between the engine and firewall.

The other thing to check is whether it really is light sport. The Wagner STC allows amax gross over 1320 so would not qualify as light sport.

The STC paperwork should be in the logs. if you need a copy of the specifics of it I could send it to you.

Doug,

I went LSA over a year ago. I found a totally restored Champ with C-85 with the Don's Dream Machine STC that uses O-200 pistons, rods and crank. I understand they dyno at 90+ hp. It's a beautiful setup and the engine really makes a strong performer out of the little Champ!

Look around a bit and take your time. There are some spectacular Champs that come onto the market from time to time. You'll have a great time with it once you find the right one.

We installed Don's engine a few years ago in our champ and the performance is outstanding, we couldn't be happier. We did the -8 I think it's called without the accessory case to save weight.

You might try calling Bill Pancake. He's the Champ guru. He's at Oshkosh every year. Google his name with Aeronca or champ.

Seems like I have seen a champ with the cutout/dimple like you describe.
