Well, if they were better funded a P180J would be interesting, a Williams FJ44, a PW600 or Honda/GE would likely fit in the same nacelle as the PT6. The fuel bun on those is not far from the PT6, would get rid of the noise issue and look even sexier.

I rented a Piaggio motor scooter in Greece last week.

Piaggio is one of the oldest aircraft manufacturers in the world, if not the very oldest. So it would be a shame if they discontinued the aircraft or jeopardized the company. But it was always a pretty pricey aircraft, obviously priced comparable to jets, which hurt it in the marketplace. It's complex to build as it has a lot of compound curves made of aluminum etc.

Kind of agree with you Gerhard, If I were the CEO of Piaggio for a day, I'd do this:

Retool to make body out of carbon fibre - much easier to do complex compound curves.
Garmin G3000 panel - let's face it, Garmin is industry standard today.
Re-engine with perhaps GE H80 or Garrett to get away from Pratt pricing policy.
Reduce price to be more competitive.

Maybe impossible to do if the company is cash strapped, but what's the alternative?

Adam,

good thoughts..

however, even with today's knowledge and expertise in regards to composites, let's assume that today ( versus the time of the Beechcraft Starship) you could maybe make it less labor intensive to build composite ( though I doubt that) and maybe even a tad lighter in structures ( I doubt that too) at least with this size of airframe, and take all other factors..that you mentioned..

such plan would basically involve a complete new certification and retooling, testing etc etc etc..major financial undertaking..the bird would maybe look the same from outside, but in fact would be a completely new and different airplane..

and if it worked out, I guess that completely "new" Avanti would probably cost 20% - 30% more at least than the existing version and have to sell in the hundreds to become a profitable venture for the manufacturer..probably would need 300 + sold copies to break even..

Gerd

seems the corporate communications which Piaggio had let out several weeks ago have raised some concerns with owners and operators…

You could haul it in a Pilatus.
Good thread, I always thought the P180 would go pure jet too.

Two guys that used to work together at Avantair start a new jet share company, and despite their better judgement (they should know, right?), they do the insane thing and go and buy, not one, but six (SIX!), P180 Avanti's. Don't they know these Italian thoroughbreds break down constantly, can't be serviced anywhere, can't be supplied with parts, cost a fortune to maintain and are completely unreliable? Boy, do these guys need their heads checked!

Well Adam they may, but perhaps not. They are buying the planes from their former, bankrupt employer. Which was a fractional company. They are not, as they say in the article, but rather a company that customers buy a part of. A distinction without a difference in my opinion.

We'll see.
