Comparable to a King Air 200 in terms of requirements. Will require formal initial school and also recurrent every 12 months - mentoring of course if you are new to type and/or lower time etc. Some (very few) insurers will allow the Piaggio school to be in aircraft training - most require the simulator based course at least for the initial training.

For me with ~2400 hours total time and just 400 hours multi piston from pressurized Aerostar insurance was/is reasonable. Full initial 2 week course from Flight Safety and yearly training which can be in aircraft with about 2-3 approved instructors or Flight Safety Sim and ground. I go to training a couple times a year. If you have significant turbine time I would recommend just the recurrent 5 day course from Flight Safety. After my 4th time for full yearly training at Flight Safety I always learn/relearn something worthwhile.

Hopefully, I'll get to see one (and show my wife) at OSH. I've been thinking seriously about the Avanti for awhile and, when I get closer to pulling the trigger, will try to connect with a Florida owner for a chat and a close look at his airplane. Ken

Although cheaper than a jet (probably), they move in rarified air, still. Thank god for Garrets for us bottom-of-the-barrel turbinistas! Can you give more details on what these overhauls were for and why they were doing them if they aren't using it 135? If they were for the PT6's, then ok. I think that's a waste of money but it's personal preference. If it's for airframe stuff I'd love to know more.

Unless they were 8000 hours + or since last overhaul or Part 135 he wasted his money in my opinion. These engines regularly run 80, 90 THOUSAND hours on oil rigs in different uses I have been told.

Can you give more details on what these overhauls were for and why they were doing them if they aren't using it 135? If they were for the PT6's, then ok. It was for PT6s. I am aware of Adam's owner friend, and he was at HSI and had some disc wear, it would be second overhaul, and was looking at a pretty big parts bill and long wait time to overhaul his engines. So he chose to swap engines for some that were available immediately, plus they were an "upgrade" from -66 to -66B engines. So it wasn't a straight overhaul situation.
That said, I don't know if he considered other options like doing repairs associated with the HSI and not calling it an overhaul, then continuing in service - which might have been legal, of course whether smart totally depended on extent of needed repairs and such. No idea what his options really were.
