For a TBM700 here is the effect of power with a headwind. 90 kt headwind, FL280, ISA, fuel left at an 800nm leg.

You only gain 9 gallons going 800nm by using Long Range Cruise, and add significantly to the time.

GpH TAS Endur G/S fuel to 800nm
Max Cruise 52 297 4.23 197 192
Nor Cruise 50 290 4.40 190 190
Inter Cruise 45 276 4.89 176 184
LRC 36 237 6.11 137 183

Wind (tail+/head-) -90

The crossover point is 102kt headwind. At that point Max Cruise burns the same as Long Range Cruise to 800nm, 213g. Over that headwind you burn less by using Max Cruise.

Numbers look all wrong......
Maybe it's me.

Yea, those numbers were for 80kt headwind....

So it looks like into a stiff headwind intermediate cruise is best range but overall all are similar. I would add though that it looks like you used 220 gallons as useable trip fuel (70 gallons reserve) however, if you're using lrc at 36 gph you could run another 20 gallons ~35 minutes for 980nm range.

I just pulled a distance out of the air to see what effect power has on an hypothetical but realistic trip.

Made it to San Antonio non stop. 3:42 at mostly FL380
I did see 92 knots headwind. Average pretty much spot on with what Foreflight said :75 knots
Fueled 347 gallons but only 2720 lbs when I started back up so I flew plenty far enough to land VFR.

Box was showing 710 pounds on landing prior to descent....
Easy gradual descent so....I don’t trust my fuel computer...yet

East bound flight today to escape the post blizzard melt fest in Denver. Runways were dry by 2pm but parking lot at FbO still had a slew of buried cars.

40-50 on the tail made quick work of 1300nm. With just me in it, when temps dropped later in the flight I started bumping the barber pole.

I know everyone complains about the pilot seat but mine is not bad.

SW Texas to Utah yesterday.
Got SCHOOLED in dirty airplane combined with high ISA = no energy up high.
She sat on ranch with dust blowing around for last day.

Filled for FL380 to burn less fuel and make it without making me nervous on fuel.
Passing through FL320...hmm....this is not the same rocket ship I have been flying.
Stopped at FL360 then shortly after ATC needed me at FL380 for traffic....ARGH
I should have taken the vector out of the way.
I got there without going slower than L/D plus 5 knots but she just was not happy after leveling off, as in 158 indicated and about 5 degree nose up. Not gaining airspeed and getting on step.....I.E....I don't belong here! Asked for FL360 as soon as I got traffic in sight passing below me.

344 True at FL360 with ISA +14...and headwind of 70 knots

VS Monday trip with ISA -3 and 365 True at FL380

I was rewatching the video I shot with Anthony from last year. Man, do I want one! The desire just never goes away!

Matt,

Thanks for posting your pics. Looks like you're at ICJS for your Garmin upgrade? I have #1050 at ICJS now and we are working through the pre buy. I believe you can see #1050 (black and red plane) through your windshield in the picture. When do you hope to be complete with your avionics -- I hope to be the next Piaggio in line to get Garmin at ICJC.

My birthday is 4/30. Hoping "done by then" is my present. I believe they can do more than 1 at a time...

You will both be happy with the result. It’s a great panel.

Flew home today. 1337nm into about a 37kt gradient. Started at fl360 and stepped up as I burned off fuel. It worked very well and kept the average speed higher than had I gone straight to fl400.

When I bought the plane, this was a mission I wanted to do non stop some of the time. It performed exactly as the book said it would. Actually, faster than book on slightly higher fuel burns. Landed with a shade under 600lbs.

It is extremely quiet at FL400. Speed does drop a bit though until you burn off fuel. Started out up there at 355kts and ISA+10. Temps dropped and I ended up around 364kts right before the descent.

While a jet would be nice, my round trip fuel was exactly what one way would have been with a Citation Ultra. Given I am doing these trips a lot and usually just me, that adds up.

Something is def off on my airplane Anthony. At 340 today )+6 I couldn't get more than 210 indicated 365 knots at a light weight..... weird

I am going to do a new interior and put the airplane on a serious diet material wise, but that still does not explain a 20 knot difference in speed.

They vary a bit I am told. Your leading edges are 10kts. Rest could be weight. I fly around light a lot so my plane seems fast:-). It definitely slows down when I start filling seats.

Your engines are close to tbo too, right?

What’s your empty weight - I am at 7950.
