Cute little thing. A two-seat version of this machine that had a 1000 NM range would be neat. I like that is has a BRS chute and an engine that can be removed in less than an hour, shipped for repair, and returned to the user within a week.

It is basically a one seat, 200 nm range airplane right now.

The PBS TJ-100 engine burns 40 GPH and the plane holds 40 gallons.

Physics is so annoying.

Yep, trying to make a small single stage turbine fuel efficient is not possible, but I think the range is closer to 400 miles. Still just a toy, but maybe some hope in the future.

I realize that there is more complexity to jet engines than meets the eye, but it seems to me that a 200-350HP axial flow turbine could be made for the price of a certified turbo piston engine and propeller combo. We have the technology now.

If you want a ballistic flight path, tying yourself to an artillery shell is easier.

350 HP is roughly 900 pounds thrust (lbf). Basically, a Pratt PW610F like that on the Eclipse.

They sell new for around $300K depending on volume and supply agreements.

If you can sell them for $50K, that would be a game changer.

I suggest you start a company to do that.

Technology...Yes.
Regulatory framework...No.

We don't even have the technology to deliver such a thing for under $100k - the regulations have nothing to do with that. Forming the appropriate metals to the correct tolerances is still absurdly expensive.

BS, we have the technology, but we don't have the market. We ware still trying to retrofit engines into antiquated airframes. We need to design a new engine and build airframes around that engine, not the other way around.

If some one was guaranteed to sell 10000 new 200-350HP turbine engines per year for the GA fleet you could easily build this engine.

Sounds great... Maybe you could call the company "Total Eclipse"?

They claim 480 sm plus 30 minutes reserve. That is like 12 NMPG. They don't mention at what speed or what altitude, but it would sure be a fun way to burn 25 or 30 gallons.

I don't believe that. It looks like a brochure number where the marketing guy took the cruise fuel flow and speed at high altitude and assumed the jet could do that over the entire journey. Unfortunately, this is wildly wrong for a turbine.

This is probably a better GA turbine solution..
http://www.aopa.org/News-and-Video/All- ... oprop-RV10

It is my understanding that a major hurdle to small turbine efficiency is edge clearance between blades and housing. I wonder if a blisk with an integrated outer ring could address this issue.

Also, aren't most of these tiny turbines radial flow? I wonder why. What is about axial flow that makes it harder, just overall complexity?

Ironic, I will be having dinner tonight with 3 of the main people at Sonex, the owner, the technical advisor, and the instructor pilot.
I meet with them every month.
No, am not considering buying one, though, they are cool as heck!

I'll be sure to mention to them the interest on BT.
