James,

Complacency;
I think by just asking the question you're on the right path. BT, crash talk, IFR all good reads. Our type specific web forums help. I'm asking tapping all my more experienced friends for advice.

Maybe best is focusing every day on what could go wrong, how can this plane kill me today. (Think I heard that here somewhere on BT). Reality is it will be my mistake that is the problem.

While our birds are very capable they can be presented with situations that they can't fly in. I.e. TBM headed to Atlanta from the NE that climbed thru ice and didn't respond correctly to the situation.

Never be complacent flying and never wish you were on the ground instead is my motto.

Ask yourself this question about the flight you are about to take "if this flight was to move a box of rocks would I go?" If the answer is no then don't go, if yes then off you go.

I would just add that currency is also a big thing. How often have you been flying? How often IFR? How often IFR and not on autopilot? Yes the plane has a lot of capability and can handle ice far better than any piston can. Yes the plane has a lot more power and can fly on one engine much better than any piston twin can. The real issue is how comfortable you feel. Currency goes to the plus side. Complacency is a negative.

It sounds to me as if you are (a) current and (b) have gained enough time in the plane that you are no longer behind it as every new MU-2 pilot initially is. The weather you launched in doesn't sound particularly bad, especially if you had a plan for what you would do/where you would divert to if you lost an engine.

Personally, in the MU-2, I am always on "high alert" until I get about 1000' AGL. Above that, you have time to deal with things. It's that first 1000' where you need to be on your toes -- be it IMC or VMC.

Those rocks aren't going to fly themselves...

I don't really think it is fair to remove the benefit from the risk/benefit equation. If you do that, no one flies any more since there is no benefit.

Further, a pilot who claims they follow your advice to ignore the benefit is lying to themselves. The end goal always factors into the decision, even if it subconsciously. If so, might as well be honest with ourselves and acknowledge that.

There are definitely days I would fly on an important business trip, and would not fly just for "fun".

Mike C.

Which is only about 30 seconds.

This is not airplane specific.

I was much more worried to 1000 AGL in my T210. And my worry didn't really subside until maybe 5000 AGL. Single piston engine, IMC, below 5000 is no fun if the engine quits.

So my MU2 is much more relaxing to fly. It helps that I've practice emergencies for a decade, and have 250+ engine cuts, most of them in the sim.

Mike,

No disagreement. In a single, below 1000' I was always on high alert to push the nose down and go into a controlled forced landing. In a twin I was always on high alert to respond as well (and I just have gotten in the habit of using 1000' as an altitude regardless of plane because it is just a good general number that works across multiple airframes). My point to James was that when you look at the complacency issue, no matter how experienced or how current, below 1000 feet is a place when no one should be complacent.

Had a mechanic tell me once that he thought they looked like a sweet potato with a tongue depressor laid across the top. He isn't that far from the truth. :duck:

I'd still love to have one though.

Admittedly the high wing is awesome, I like it a lot.

Low wings have their advantages, too.
