In 1994, I bought this Cub to teach my boys to fly. At the time, Grant was 9 and John 11. Both could takeoff and land it within a few weeks and continued to fly it through the years when they were home. Grant's first solo was in the Cub.

I almost sold it this summer after Grant's passing but backed out at the last minute. I have a grandson coming along and I may be blessed to live long enough that he can learn in the Cub also.

So, it's going in for a complete rebuild this week.

I'll post pictures of the progress as it moves along.

I wish you the best of luck with your project. I think you will be glad you did it. I'm sorry to hear about your son.

Who's doing the work, John? We've got a 'sentimental' Cub, too, and it'll be needing a rebuild soon.

Corey Boozer and his dad. They are in the ag spray business in Greenville, MS, and do fabric work in the off season. I've seen their work and it's very good and reasonable. Corey is also married to my son in law's sister. If anyone wants to talk to them, PM me and I'll give you Corey's cell #.

I love my newly acquired S model Bonanza. I'm fortunate and I still can't believe I own one. But, I've had a '46 J-3 Cub with a C-85 on it. That Cub is THE MOST FUN aircraft I ever flew. It's simple and cheap to fly. Started on the first pull EVERY time. I loved low and slow flights with the windows open and door down over the country while looking at the livestock, wildlife, scenery and country homes. Please share photographs when you've completed the restoration. Sad to hear of your loss. Your son would have been proud...

Good luck John. Look forward to seeing the progress. I'm in the last 6-8 weeks of my ground up rebuild on my Citabria and can't wait.

Keep us posted
Rick

Rick,

I love the 7 GCBC! First airplane I ever bought, a brand new one in 1975.

This thread really makes me feel good. I just got a 7GCBC and have two boys, 8 and 5. I've got to learn to fly from the back seat in the next few weeks. Guess why???

I taught my nephew to fly in the J-3 and when my daughter is old enough I hope she wants to continue the family tradition. We have owned it since 1981 and I'll fly it until I can't hand prop it anymore. Did a complete restoration in 1995.

As the boys grew older and flew other airplanes, I was very pleased at the stick and rudder skills they had acquired from the Cub.

I learned in a Champ and 172 when I was eleven years old. Over the years, I can remember several airplanes that I just "got in and flew" with no instruction; Stearman and AT-6 to name a couple. Learning the basics from a basic airplane is a distinct advantage, IMO>

Some airplanes are givers and some are takers and of course most are some combination of both. A J3 is a giver.
Owning a J3 is like having a Golden Retriever.
