But yes agreed The line in the sand is: Have you flown when you really didn't want to fly/feel like flying or even not feel 100% ? Have you flown someplace you didn't want to go? Have you flown in weather you didn't want to fly in? Have you flown equipment you really don't like (poorly equipped, quirky features, intermittent un-diagnosed failures? If the answer to all these is no, you have not experienced the professional side of aviation. The professional HAS to fly. The amateur can call the whole thing off if he/she feels like it. Getting paid alone doesn't get you over the line.

Art, The new tax plan did away with 1031's for aircraft (but did retain them for real estate). It isn't the end of the world...the easiest way to address the issue to sell the current plane and buy the replacement plane in the same tax year (and the order in which you do it doesn't matter nor do you need a Qualified Intermediary and all of the hassle that comes with the 1031 process, etc). -Neal
