I operate out of a 2200' 1860 msl runway at my winter home in AZ (2AZ1). The airplane, a 601P, handles it fine providing you pay attention and are on speed. If I'm heavy, it's really hot, I'm tired or it's dark I go to KBLH and take the car home. If you are off your game, 2200' goes by rather quickly.

I bought N6ZR from the flightshop.. (601P intercoolers, short props) This afternoon I just finished my initial checkout with Kent Larson...
What a fine capable airplane.

I sat in it in his hangar and it's a beautiful piece of work. He was trying to sell it then, but don't know if it did sell. In any case, he had a new project - same idea, but a shortened Aerostar with a big block PT6 up front. Whenever it gets ready, it will be an insane rocket. Probably twice as much power as the Speedster (who was no slouch) on a lighter frame. Can't wait...

Anyone run Aerostars LOP? What power settings do you use/what fuel flow have you ended up with? How do speeds compare to ROP? Any CHT issues?

All can run LOP, however on the larger U2A engines LOP is capped around 45% power due to TIT temps. I used to run about 190 KTAS on 13 GPH a side with the larger U2A engines at LOP. At ROP, I would often run 65 to 75% power and push 250 to 260 KTAS on a regular basis burning 25 GPH a side. Someone else can give you the numbers for the 601, but it can run LOP all the way to something like 75% power (I think). Tim

Daniel, I have a 601P w/Intercoolers, and short props (300HP) and normally run LOP, except for TO and Climb. The first things you need to understand (and you may well already do) is that LOP, GPH = HP, and more HP equals more indicated air speed; and all else being equal, higher altitude equals higher true airspeed. On my Turbo Normalized IO-540 S1A1 engines I am limited on my LOP fuel flows by the 1650F TIT limit. I can run about 14 GPH (per engine) below 10K' which gives me about 170 to 180 KTAS. Up high, I can only run about 12.5 GPH and at FL230-250 I see between 205 and 210KTAS. CHTs are a non-issue LOP, I see between low 300s and high 200s in cruise. My normal LOP MAP/RPM setting is 26-28' & 2,200-2,100 RPM. ROP @ FL230-250 at 27" x 2,200 (75%) burns about 36-38GPH and gives 230-235 KTAS. My plane has a lot of antennas (including an HF antenna) so it's Max Cruise may be a bit slower than other 601Ps, but with the winglets, my economy cruise is still pretty good. A good place to start is for unbiased Aerostar information is: http://www.aerostar-forum.com
