Phil, Flight aware does give a breakdown of speeds and altitude, below the position photos. Chester is a racer, and he jumped on that momentary 334 K speed. Winds are playing with him, and he has changed altitudes to try for favorables. Recent check showed back in the 190K speed range. Gives Lancair a bad name no? No. I think more people will look past the safety records and consider them after this positive publicity.
All' s well that ends well. :cross:

Brave is the next leg of the flight.. I hope he brings lots of oxygen to maximize the Wind push.

Should we plan a welcome party in Orlando for him? we'll have plenty of notice when he departs.. it'll be 25+ hours!

Count me in!

Bill make need a few extra hands to remove him from the sitting position.

Nate

So, Do we have an estimated arrival time yet or should we just wait until he hits the west cost and radar tracking/speed becomes more predictable..?

I see on the Spidertracks website he's been climbing, speed will pick up as time goes by and fuel/weight is reduced.

Anyone know how long his routing is? Again it seems that the predicted flight path length that Flight Aware is quoting is incorrect. I think they are giving straight line. 8113 sm if I recall correctly. Must be shorter then that.

Phil

Foreflight says the direct distance from PGUM to KJAX is 7,038 NM which converts to about 8100 SM.

Bill constructed his Lancair IV over eight years. He also built a Lancair 320 which he and his wife flew to Europe a few years back. He is a 26,000+ retired airline captain for American. He built the IV specifically for efficiency and endurance. It's empty weight is under 2,000 pounds. He has a normally aspirated IO-550 which has been modified with 10:1 pistons. It develops 327hp on the dynamometer. His aircraft is not pressurized. He uses oxygen with the Mountain High pulse demand regulator.

I just heard about this today. Reading the threads on the Lancair list, I thought at first it was another round the world hop, skip and jump.

Then I learned what it was... wow.

Bravo!

His engine builder told me he emailed Bill couple weeks ago, told him that if it developed an oil leak , or fuel valve trouble.. To be sure to rip his decal off the plane before it splashed...... LOL

Looks like Bill is over the high country. He has gotten no help from Mother Nature on his record breaking quest. His Lancair IV cruises @ 185kts LOP and has a top speed of 250kts.

He will be crabbing until the wind gradually comes to his tail over the final leg.

Up to 17000 over the Rockies, so he must be awake.

I showed this to my wife and her first words were, "Soooo, he has to go to the bathroom in that little plane?"
