Quote: Mike, ATP, CFI, CFII, MEI, MES, SES, Glider, EA50. MIke, Your posts describe a thoroughly prepared, detailed pilot who not only has been well trained, but who is a pilot trainer himself. A great combination of skills that is an enviable accomplishment to most of us here. No doubt, you will continue to do well... enjoy your pocket rocket! Best regards, Jerry

The accident rate is horrific but when I look at the people flying these things I'm convinced Lancairs don't kill people, pilots kill Lancairs. Regardless, I'm going to do the full course for piece of mind. I'm not saying I'm Hotel Sierra (Hot SH$T) but I really feel good in this plane but will appreciate the formal confirmation of such to prevent undue arrogance.
I'd like to think I'm not an idiot pilot who is unskilled but training is never a bad thing.

I figured the recommendation to get type specific training would be followed by a post with a bunch of alphabet ratings.
I never said he was an low time idiot pilot. But don't even pro pilots get recurrent training every 6 months in a plane they have been flying for thousands of hours? I know I do. As a CFI I recommend pilots get some familiarization training in a high performance plane that is new to them from a CFI with lots of experience in it. Not necessarily the local CFI guy down at the airport. I also take that advice for myself.
I agree a lot of the accidents are the pilots (idiot pilots at that) fault. Michael has the experience that the plane demands. A lot of owners don't. The Lancair is very cheap for the performance, not to mention pressurization. That lures a lot of people to it not suited for its capabilities and limitations.
Like I said I did it and it was worth it. It's more than just up down left right. You'll learn a lot about the systems and where others have had problems. Gotchas of some of the designs. Where to look for problems. Most mechanics know little to nothing about the plane. How to get the best performance out of it. Cooling issues. I could go on and on.
Great plane. I just took my whole family from KANE to KISM weather in the way, some IFR. No big deal. I wouldn't be afraid to take it IFR anymore than a Bo.
Just making a safety recommendation from one ATP/CFI to another.
Glad you are doing the course. A good instructor will tailor it to your experience level. Not just check boxes like you came from a Cherokee.
On my way to flight safety next month for the 22nd time in the Citation X. And I learn something new every time. Just saying..... Btw ATP, CFI, CFII, MEI, Comm ASES. Current PIC CE-750. Plus other type ratings.

Mike, ATP, CFI, CFII, MEI, MES, SES, Glider, EA50. Michael, PM me. My good friend Ern Sutter is / was one of Lancairs check Pilots. He is one of the few guys approved for training in these awesome machines. Ern races his Legacy he built at Reno. He is also one of the best sticks I have flown with. I will say I have a lot of time. That includes Jet time. Erns legacy intimidated me. But with some training and time it's piece of cake and a helluva good time. Ryan

Several posts back I was reading how this airplane has zero tolerance for wing contamination and that you should absolutely never risk getting into icing conditions. So a statement like that above still sends a chill down my back. But I am pretty conservative.

did the first flight on one of them. It struck me that the tail was just too small for reasonable low speed handling. Just my impression. I could see how people get in trouble with engine failures. The builder asked me to take it home and fly off his 40 hours, I declined. It's more work and worry than I need.

I personally organized an impromptu "aim and distance" contest my first week of kindergarten. My classmates were fortunate to have such leadership. (And that just was the first time the school called home about me...)
