Agreed. J models only have about 9" of prop tip clearance sitting on the ground. Landing too fast and getting into a porpoise will most likely ding the prop on the 3rd bounce. Also the inner gear doors are subject to damage on rough fields and maybe even in tall grass or deep snow. Our group restricts operations to hard surface only - concrete or asphalt.

I don't think you should discount a plane because the pilot is unable to maintain appropriate airspeed control on final. If this is an issue for a pilot of a Mooney, the issue is training, not the airplane.

You're right its not a back country plane - its the wrong plane for the mission, but we've landed ours on grass occasionally, and its no problem for occasional use.

Becca,

You'll notice I fly an M20J. I even calculate a final approach speed for every flight:

58 + 1.5 * (hundreds of pounds of fuel/bags/people). Add 10 knots for no flap.

Love the plane.

Mooney drivers! Nobody said your plane is ugly, inefficient or not 'incredibly stable'. No need to get all wound up. Just don't tell me how spacious it is.

I have 800+ hrs in the V35B and many hundreds of hours in various Mooneys, mostly the 201. My first retractable was a Super 21 and brother has a 201.

At the moment I have use of an M20R Ovation. It is a hoot of an aeroplane to fly. I took it for a lap up the coast yesterday for a test flight - 2400 rpm/23" MP gave me a TAS of 170 kts at 2500'. Would a IO550 V35B do that? I don't know.

I am just on 6' and 220 lbs. The V35B was much easier to get in and out of than the 201 or the Ovation. The last time I had my brothers 201 I got stuck trying to get out of it!

Once you are in the Mooney its OK but I personally prefer the seating position of the Bonanza with more bend in my legs than the Mooney, where your legs are pretty much straight out in front of you.

I have done some long trips in the V35B, not so much in the Mooney. 10 hr flying days in the Bo were always comfortable.

IO550 V35B or Mooney Ovation? I'd take the Bo every time!

Sounds like the cirrus is actually bigger than the Mooney, Bonanza, Cessna and John Deere. I'll go over to the COPA site and start this exact thread and see what we get.

I knew we would get along. And I think you would like my Mooney. The colors. The decals. :peace:

I always enjoy these threads. Over the years I have seen many Mooney owners compare their airplanes to Bonanzas. I rarely see a Bonanza owner initiate a comparison with a Mooney.

I remember a Gulfstream pilot talking about the new Citation 750. He said, "Would you really want to go Mach 9 in anything built by the company that builds 172s?"

Mooneys do sit differently than Bonanzas, Cessnas, or Pipers but I find the seat to be more comfortable than the 757 I used to work in. Still, we do not want to sit in the plane more than 3 hours without getting out to stretch the legs.

One of the reasons I discounted a Mooney, a relatively minor one as a Mooney is probably about the worst choice for back country stuff but one I kept in mind. When I'm on a cross country flight I will often take my legs and stretch out across the passenger space including the seat. Can't do that in a Mooney.

Front seats can slide back enough that an NBA center could stretch his legs, but clearly the shoulder width would be a problem if a power forward was in the copilot seat.

You miss Starkville?? :bugeye:
State is a great school, but STARKVILLE? :bugeye:

I was driving through Alabama during football season and listening to a "conference call" on a radio station of several sports writers. One claimed that "Starkville" was an old indian name for trailer park. He was from Baton Rouge (LSU guy) so he damn well ought to know a trailer park when he sees one.

Hotty Totty.

John, I used to like you.

But bragging on Ol' Miss vs. State? Might as well go back to your Mooney....

(too bad you couldn't get into college and had to go to Ol' Miss instead....)
