I agree. I fly approaches in the baron at 150 and about the same in the Duke. I don't fly out of short strips and I own fast planes to go fast, not to see how slow I can get them before falling out of the sky. If I want to putz around I will do it in a cub.
The trick will be finding a well built machine with the upgraded mods. I would really like to find a good airframe with old panel so I can retro it to the g3x. When I was looking there was a very well built one at double eagle in Albuquerque that was still in primer and all the maintenance done at Performance One in Mesa Arizona. They are probably the top shop to talk to about GIII's and very down to earth and helpful with questions when I called.

Cruise over 300kts and able to operate off short unimproved airstrips, plus everything else it does it really is a BMF. I think Larry is asking 225-250K for his.

Have you considered a Turbine Legend, instead? This one is/was for sale ($275k). That plane is one of the few times I have been sorely tempted by a turbine. http://www.n51pz.com/Edit: I guess someone beat me to it.

Great thread. I'm so frustrated with the certified aircraft industry lately. My RV-7 empennage kit is on the way... can't wait for this adventure! I really, really like the Lancair Legacy. Gorgeous airplane with great numbers. I hope to build one some day. Good luck

Username Protected wrote: Tim, Just to clarify, you can put 2 or 3 G3x boxes and even add a GTN 650 in an experimental, giving you every conceivable gadget right now (SV, HITS, an autopilot that will climb or descend based on selected VS or airspeed, etc.), and even with the install it won't be anywhere near $60K. Same thing with the new Dynon Touch or the new GRT stuff... Arlen, The quote I priced was for a 3 Panel Garmin G3X, Dynon Backup, dual GTN 750s and Garmin A/P, Transponders.... Everything. Still a lot cheaper then the R9 in the Cirrus or a KFC225, Garmin 600, dual GTN 750, JPI 960, Garmin Transponders... Tim

Username Protected wrote: Those are good points Shaun. Yes, I would agree the impact survivability is not as good. I built and flew a Velocity back in 1994. I never worried about the impact. I worried about fire more. As for parts - price a gear door or a starter adapter for your Bonanza lately? With Garmin experimental avionics and autopilot and a Lycoming 540 I don't see much to spend there. The airframe parts are available from what I can tell. Insurance is pretty cheap on the non-pressurized singles. I think I can get insurance for about the same as a Bonanza.
I would only buy one that was professionally built or was given the go ahead by a shop that specializes in them. I remember doing the layups in my Velocity. It is pretty easy work, but requires attention. With that said, how many times has a 40 year old Bonanza been overspeeded, run through thunderstorms, landed hard, etc? Annual inspections don't catch everything. Todd, have you read this article: http://www.seqair.com/FlightTest/KillYo ... rself.html

Todd, I'm gonna talk you out of it. 4 place turbo cirrus. Decent speed, all safety aspects covered as best as possible. Go NA if you don't want the additional turbo 'stuff'. You also get two extra seats. That's the winner in my books. Charter when you need more than 4 seats. Reduce the hassle, get back to enjoying flying and leave the 'head-achy' heavy iron flying to those who fly them more than 20 plus hours a month. Now talk me outta that plan
