Ryan, PS had his airplane registered under the name of prop jocks. I believe his wife still has the huge ranch next to the wild life way station a few miles s e of KWHP. They had/ have a large black 18 wheeler to transport their horses to events and their other ranch in new mexico. I spoke with the mechanics that worked on patricks airplane at van nuys airport, that the ooozing nicotine sealed all the leaks, keeping the pressurization working well. Dont know if you remember, but patrick was rumored to have been drunk when he made an emergency landing in arizona and wiped out a wing on a telephone pole. The NTSB said an exhaust clamp broke, causing gasses to get into the cabin, so that was a good move on PS to drop out of the sky, empty wine bottles were removed quickly before authorities arrived. Patrick called his good friend Clint the chiropractor at KWHP to rescue him and his dogs and take him to his other ranch in las vegas new mexico. Clint was a pro body builder and had a nice aerostar. The 414 was properly repaired, dont know if kurt russell still ownes a 414? Captain Frank, the airline pilot that owned sunquest aviation at KWHP, gave PS his instrument training in N414PS. Frank was always inviting PS and his wife to go on weekend junkets, but according to franks wife PS was very tight and rarely offered to pay for fuel. Captain frank was killed about a year before PS died. On a lear charter, his rookie co pilot left the baggage door unsecured, it came open on take-off out of van nuys and baggage was sucked into the engine. Crashed just off the end of the runway. I spoke with the old man that owned the property, house and large lot where they crashed. He could see the pilots faces in the airplane, he dove behind a large pile of bricks, the heat was so intense from the fire he said he was lucky to have survived. Frank had tons of friends, PS attended franks reception held at rockies restaurant and bar at whiteman. Lots of interesting stories out of whiteman. John Travolta used to take flying lessons in an aircoupe out of KWHP too!

No baggage went into the engine??? read the NTSB report??

Have you joined Twin Cessna Flyers? It's no BT but lots of good information. Thanks Tony Yes I joined Twin Cessna Flyers (TCF) about a year ago. Good bunch of info, but your right its no BT . BT is like the first week of school, lots of party and a little bit of work but still lots to be learned if you like. TCF not so much, no jokes, no gun advice, no drool causing aviators, and no hair talk

Remember to burn 1.5 hrs on the mains before switching to the AUX tanks. Also, watch the speed on the landing lights. 1) the motors are $$$$, 2) If you trip the breaker (too much wind resistance-extension) then you lost the shuttle pump, too.
enjoy! Good advice Andy We had discussed most of this during pre-buy but any advice is appreciated. There are 2 guys on the field were the 414 is based that have offered to do my transitional training. They have both flown this 414 and fly another one weekly. I plan on using them and also talking a SIM course. Thanks

Gerald, I apologize, yes it was a Cessna CJ. I just finished reading the full NTSB final report. As I recall speaking with the property owner, the closest witness observing the last few seconds of the flight, the jet was low and rocking longitudinally making no turns before it augered in. It was heading north, aligned with the runway 34 that it took off on. The pilot of a cessna 414 that took off from the paralell runway was flying looking down at the ill fated jet after hearing them declare their intention of returnng to the airport. As you may recall, Baseball player Thurmon Munson was on base to final in his new cessna citation and spun it in. The report stated that..., several witnesses on the ground thought they observed dark objects coming out of the baggage compartment and enter the left engine. Upon examination of both engines, engine blade damage was consistent with a ground strike, and no objects were found on the runway or the flight path to the scene of the accident. It is still possible that one or more small objects may have entered the left engine, ie quarts of oil?. At least 6 other reports of baggage doors coming open during flight on these cessna jets, some with objects entering an engine. I would bet my next paycheck that captain frank, at 72 yrs of age, with his 38000 hrs was distracted and let a simple situation get out of control. The co pilot may have felt intimidated and would not take control away from his superior?

It can happen to any of us.

Hey Doug, Don't want to be a party pooper, and you probably already have this planned, or may have already done it...Go to one of the big flight sim schools (Simcom, Flight Safety) and do the initial training. It's been extremely helpful for me. I'd recommend in-plane recurrency training alternating with sim training every 6 months. I've been doing that in the 58P for the past seven years, and counting. Three partial engine failures during that seven year period (cracked cylinders), didn't have to shut the engine down, but did have to think through the process. Happy flying!

Funny you should bring this up, I just booked flights to go to RTC http://www.rtcpilot.com/piston-pilot-tr ... 1-initial/ in Illinois. My insurance didn't require it but I believe that training (and attitude) is very important. Their initial course is well price at $2,000. What is your experience with the various SIM outfits?

Not familiar with RTC, but know of them. I've gone to Simcom yearly for a few reasons:
Pros: -The have pre-1984 baron sims made from actual Barons (all switches, power settings, feel, are just like the real airplane. Non-motion sim, but very convincing visuals. Didn't have to learn a new cockpit, panel, flows, etc. -One-on-one training -Excellent and knowledgable instructors with actual P-Baron time. They put you thru the paces in the sim. Sims in nice places (Orlando, Scottsdale...I usually go during the winter..to get out of Minnesota. Although I picked up some of the worst icing ever coming back from Scottsdale one year, over the Rocky's, at FL230!
Cons: -Pricy -Non-motion sim for the Baron. Not sure about the Cessna 414.
