My experience with Malibus and Meridians is somewhat limited. I owned an '87 Malibu for 11 days, and sold it in favor of my Baron. (I wrote an article in the ABS magazine about it a few months ago). Mostly, in my opinion the Malibu was underpowered...just too much plane for the power available. Obviously, the Meridian solves this problem. Other than the power issue, I thought the Malibu was a really nice airplane. I'd definitely consider owning a Meridian if I could afford the purchase price. And as far as the payload issue, the Piper dealer representative explained the low max gross weight of the Meridian is necessary to keep the stall speed within the 61 knot restriction. I believe the airplane would do just fine if you accidentally loaded it over gross.

could very well be, but the problem is the insurance company wouldn't.
