My hangar neighbor had a P337 that is exceptional. Super cool, but seemed very maintenance heavy. Can't count how many times i'd taxi by on my way somewhere and he was wrenching.
Engines and gear are not easy to work on.
Unfortunately he passed a year ago. He was a career airline guy and a check airman for Northwest. He scoured the earth for his 337 and only got to enjoy it for a couple years. But, in those couple years it was never ending maintenance.
His widow sold it to a couple local guys but i never see it fly much all...sad all around. It's based at KPAE.

250hp IO540s on a normally aspirated Aztec are almost loafing.

The truth is the Aztec (and others) have roots in the 50s when the post-war thinking was that every other farm in America would have a 2600 foot strip on their quarter square, and many twins of the time were designed for 2600' of grass. Balanced field length wasn't really a thing in GA marketing as much as 50' obstacle takeoff distance. I'd list the Twin Bo, the Commander, and the Aztec as the best examples of that era. For your stated mission, I would definitely check out an Aztec before a 337. Sure, they have quirks and they're not for everyone, but they match what you've listed so far. The 337 really is almost a two or three person airplane when travelling. My wife and I liked it just fine for that. We took a 30 hour trip with four people, and we were absolutely sardined into that plane. I weighed every scrap of paper we took and could never take on full fuel. You can get a baggage pod for the 337, but the cg of the pod isn't in a great place and you can't expect the pods to be weather or oil proof. I didn't get an Aztec over the 500B because I put a very high premium on visibility from the cockpit and easier loading. The Aztec isn't hard to load (especially with the massive rear door STC) but nothing is easier to load than a Commander.

Viz from a Commander cannot be beat.
If i had the hangar....I'd own a Commander in a heartbeat. I've got a little history with Twin Commander Aircraft.

Here's the P337 I mentioned earlier. Currently looking for a 3rd partner. Mark

Lots of 337 talk on here. The rear prop is a vacuum and loves to ruin itself with rocks, bolts, and “stuff” getting slung into it. It would not be my first choice. I had a Robertson STOL 337 and it is good at getting airborne quickly and not flipping over when a motor quits and the list generally ends there. Also…I may have been micronapping but didn’t he say he didn’t have the space for a commander?
