Well, the 425 also burns 80% more lbs an hour in fuel... I think you'll find the payload, for a specific range, to be pretty close between the 421 and 425.

The 425 definitely does not have 1,000 lbs more payload than the 421.

The payload with full fuel is almost identical between a 421C and a 425. It will vary depending on empty weight.

what are the actual time intervals for the 3 and D

Zach, if you fly 100 hours per year or less, then you will alternate between the 2,3 inspections and the 2,3,D inspections. There won't be a need for an additional phase 2 at 101 hours. It's like this:

phase 2: every 100 hours or 12 months
phase 3: every 200 hours or 12 months.
phase D: every 600 hours or 24 months.

I have a spreadsheet on the SIDs which I'll send you later. Most of the SIDs are pretty insignificant. But a couple are kind of big however those are based on hours and the intervals are pretty long. For example, the rudder torque tube inspection is a big one (not sure of the cost) but it's due every 2500 hours. One thing to look for is how many hours your candidate airplane has since all the SIDs were done in 2008/9. If it is less than 1000 hours then you have a nice long time before any of the big ones are due again.

But remember, if you move from a baron to a 425, you will likely fly more, not less. It's way more capable (like any turbine) and makes long trips doable. If you have a lot of short hops and need to carry 8 people, you may look into taking the toilet out. I have 8 seats and no toilet and it makes the cabin huge. You'll have to find the 2 optional 7th and 8th seats someplace.

Great stuff in here, thanks!

You are right..
I was talking useful, and a WAG, without books in front of me.
The 414 I flew had a useful of 1500 until we did the RAM mods, then I think it was about 1700. 414A was closer to 2000, and I think the 421 was around 2200. The 425 is in the neighborhood of 3300.
Full fuel payload is probably similar. ( I haven't been in any 400 series in 20+ years)

I would rather be in the 425 with 8 on board than a 421. They are all good airplanes within their limitations.

Just for reference... My 421 has a useful load of 2,392. You are correct that the 425 has 1,000lbs more useful however - Max takeoff (per Google, I have no personal experience in a 425) is 8,600 whereas the 421 - with VGs - is 7630.

Both great airplanes. The 400 series cockpit and cabin are extremely comfortable.

I can’t seem to find any of my W&B numbers from the 3 different 425’s I flew. But they were easy 1000lb 1000 mile airplanes with plenty of reserve fuel.

Was the first airplane I did a real single engine go around with one shut down in feather. It was a non event push the power up grab the gear lever and fly away.

Never got to fly a 421 but loved the 425. Load it up to the gills and she would just perform.

I have the toilet seat in my 425 that is a legal belted seat plus the 8th removable seat. Works fine for my kids. I haul my family of eight several times a year. My wife actually sits in seat #8. She likes to ride as far away from me as possible...does that seem weird to you?

I was just making a WAG... Jeff, how much more useful did you see.

From what I recall the 414A was about 750 lbs with full fuel and the 425 is about 900 lbs

I initially was going to buy a TBM 700B but after learning the true cost of ownership in a prebuy , and attending Simcom I made the decision to move forward on the Conquest, and haven't looked back.

Can you elaborate on that? Were you including the acquisition cost in the equation or did you reason operating costs as being higher on the TBM than the conquest?

The TBM has an extensive maintenance schedule some of which is optional but seems brokers/buyers push for maintenance to be followed including optional and all I can tell you is the cost to maintain per the recommended schedule is expensive. Enough that I am not too concerned about the ongoing SIDS maintenance cost. That coupled with fact that large Pratt is only slightly less expenisve to OH as the two smaller Pratts combined, made it an easy decision for me. Don't get me wrong, the TBM is a great plane and very simple to fly. For me, I liked the cockpit, cabin size, luggage space, toilet, and twin engines of the Conquest.

O, and, another (and potentially bigger) problem is finding a good example to buy! Currently only a handful for sale on Controller, I think 9 at last count. Of those 9, 2-3 are phony adds that the broker has up but doesn't actually have for sale.

Can a potential buyer expect to have a long wait or are off-market deals more common compared to its piston brethren?

Anyone know if this plane is one of the phony ones? Or a sub-standard example?

Jeff

I only have a few hours in the TBM, but it was enough to know it won’t work for us.

A plane with 4 seats is great for 2 people, 6 is ok for 4, and 8 is barely enough for 6.
