I am just curious why some choose a 340 over a 414 or 421 when you can have much more load carrying capability with a bigger twin By all reports, they're not (with the exception of geared engines in 421s), but a 340 will fit into hangars and fly out of runways that the 4xxs can't.

In addition, because the 400s are larger (more cross section and length) the 340 will be faster for the same fuel, or less fuel for the same speed.
A 4xx would not fit in my T, or any T hangar that I know of at our airport for that matter.

I'll pretty much agree with what others have said - The 421 doesn't cost that much more to operate than a 340.
The geared engines on the 421 are as reliable as any Continental 520 - They do require a starter adapter inspection and cost about $10k/side more to overhaul, but over the life of an engine it doesn't amount to more than a few dollars per hour. For some reason people are scared of them, but I don't get it - They are great engines.
The 340 is smaller and will be slightly more fuel efficient/cheaper, but it's too small for my mission (and I just don't fit into the pilot's seat!).
If you don't need the size of the 421, then the 340 is a great plane - However, you're not going to save a ton of money.

Can you reduce risk to zero, NO!! i agree. So apple to apples (be they granny smith or red delicious) the difference in operating cost between a specific 340 and a specific 421 is mostly luck.

This is why a complete set of NO BS logs is very important. Buyers get too cheap or in a hurry on the pre buy and pay for their mistake. I'd always be more comfortable w a lot of luck. To many issues pop up that wouldn't be caught otherwise.
