The company I now fly for said the same thing and upgraded from a 2006 CJ3 to 2014 XLS+ . They bypassed the Encore as wasn't a big improvement in Cabin /performance for the price.
Nigel But what if you're just buying your first jet? Is there a reason to choose and Encore over a CJ3? Why would I pick one over the other? The CJ3 costs more to acquire I think. CJ4 is out. I think it costs a lot more to run than a CJ3 but not much more benefit. Even the CJ sales guys tell me this.
Encore is traditional 500 series fuselage with newer trailing link gear and Primus 1000 avionics. I think you have to go to the Encore + for FADEC. Both have PWC 535A series engines w 5000 hr TBO. They are very expensive to overhaul. Although you can fly them single pilot with an exemption, some may not like the 5 day recurrent every year to do so. The Encore,to me, represents the very best iteration of the 500 series. Heated leading edges etc. I have owned and or operated CJs, 500,501,550,551 and 560s. I personally think the best bang is the Citation V Ultra. However, In your case, a CJ3 gives you single pilot, good avionics, good fuel specifics, excellent exterior baggage, good fuel specifics. Cost used Prob 4.5 mil and up. Most CJs are on engine program so you pay as you go. Only consider TAP on CJs. Not JSSI. Most JT15D powered Citations are not on an engine program. The engines are fairly bulletproof and there are several choices for MRO on JT15Ds. There are so many variables that this could go on forever. I'm in Mexico now. Flight track me.N135WC. Ultra. True AS @ FL400 is 430kts. Headwind was 70-80-90 knots. I departed w 4800lbs fuel, landed with 1350lbs. 7 onboard. Still way under MGTOW. Over all weather. It's a hoss. Prob buy the nicest one for 2mil or less. Robert

Can the Ultra direct climb to higher flight levels from a MTOW takeoff or does it need to step climb like the older citations?

Not quite at gross; about 1,000 under. The last few thousand were less than 1,000 FPM, but we didn't have to step climb. Maybe full on a hot day one might need to. Encore would do a bit better.
