The father/son team that is rebuilding it are also in the Ag business and do most of their rebuild work from November to April. I delivered the Cub in December and after stripping it down, we decided it needed a fair amount of replacement of airframe components: control cables, boot cowl, battery box and the like. Time seemed to drag on and the spraying season arrived. I wasn't in a hurry and wanted it done right, not fast. At this point, it is being promised "in September". I didn't ask "which September", just kidding. I suspect that I'll have it in late October or so. Thanks for asking and I'll post pics. When I get it, come down and I'll let you fly it. Jg

I almost sold it this summer after Grant's passing but backed out at the last minute. I have a grandson coming along and I may be blessed to live long enough that he can learn in the Cub also.
Jgreen John, I'm very proud of you for taking the time and effort to give your Grandson this great oppportunity. Sorry to hear of your hardships, you done some great accomplishments having kids that could fly at those ages. Can't wait to follow this thread and see the progress and those first flights. Cubs have so many STC's available I'm just curious if you are going to do any add ons? The only one that comes to mind might be the mod for the rear cargo door which now would be a perfect time to do for you. Looks like a great bird and your family has lots of history in it. Congratulations!! I'm teaching our 11 yr old daughter to fly the Cub I learned to fly in. Heres a picture from about 2 summers ago.

To those of you that are teaching or going to teach you children to fly might I make a suggestion. I did what some of you are doing and had my son flying in a cub before he could reach the rudder pedals but they can't solo until 16 and some loose interest because of that. But they can solo gliders at 14 and glider flying teaches good rudder use and energy management. There are some great glider schools around the country and the instruction that you've given in the cub makes it easy. Might think about what I did. Went with him and got my glider add on rating. (It's called bonding) My son soloed gliders ( 2-33 and 1-26) on his 14 birthday, Stearman on his 16th and is a Delta A-320 Captain. Just some thoughts. Ed Weber "Still in the air at 79"

Kelly, She is going back together now. I think my Cub, a '46 J-3, has 12 STC or field mods including the rear baggage area. It's pretty much a PA-11 now. Ed, I completely agree about the glider experience. Grant actually did that, John played too many sports so he didn't get energized to get his license until after law school. On the other hand, I was astounded to learn from your post that a kid cannot solo until 16!! You know I'm kidding, don't you? I'll see if Corey has any recent pictures of the Cub and post them, Jg

Ed I never really thought about that and surely don't want to burn her out early on but glider lessons would be great. I don't know of any nearby but will check into that, thankyou. sounds like your children have done well, Goodjob!!
John, can't wait to see how everything turns out for you. What a great aircraft to put the money and time into as it will provide another lifetime worth of enjoyment to come. Might lighten up your QE a little though, I looked into getting ours reskinned and a few small things and it was going to be well North of 50K so that got put on hold. Keep the pics a coming!! Thanks

Kelly, The father/son team will rebuild your Cub for a lot less than 50K. The work I have seen is "very good", IMO, but the "ultimate test" will come when I get my Cub back. I don't really remember all the costs as I don't write the checks and I have better things to "worry" about, but I suspect mine will come in at about $35,000. The "son" is my son in law's brother in law and my grandson's grandmother is on him heavy that her grandson, my grandson, will be flying this airplane someday. I guess you could say she is my "quality control inspector". If you aren't confused by now, I'll try again. I'll post pics and you can be the judge. Jgreen

Corey forwarded some pics. They are working on it so I suspect by the end of the month it will be ready. They are applying the color to the fuselage and wings, "as we speak". Jgreen

Jgreen I can see they are very detailed and these pics already tell me it is going to be awesome. I'm assuming you are doing a complete re-fabric?? I think flying it out and back would be fun enough to have this done. I will keep in touch with you on this. Im sure if wanted they could paint one and make it look like my friends if wanted?? Edited: I removed a pic here as I thought it might distract your thread. I'm' sure they can do two tones as well, my quote was from Cubcrafters and they start a 50K and work off of that. Thankyou!
