The purpose of a cost of capital item is to put the total expenses into a common $/yr framework where they can be added and compared. Opex is already in that format.

Below are the annual returns for the S&P 500. For whatever time period you are holding your airplane, your “opportunity cost” or “cost of capital” for investing in your airplane versus putting that money in an S&P 500 index fund can be seen below. I don’t know how long you have owned your airplane, but let’s say you had if for 10 years and you paid 2 million for it. The inflation adjusted annualized return for the last 10 years with dividends reinvested is almost 11%. So if you invest 2 million in an aircraft you could have turned that 2 million into 5.6 Million by just putting it into an S&P 500 index fund instead of buying the aircraft for that time period.
If you say “It doesn’t matter because there is no way I would not have an airplane” that is fine but that does not change the fact that your 2 million could have been changed into 5.6 million by just parking it in an S&P 500 index fund for the 10 years you owned the airplane. So you are passing by that gain by having an airplane. That is a cost.
If you say “Your opportunity cost idea is bogus because there is no guarantee that I will earn anything in a future investment”, it is true there are no guarantees about the future, only probabilities. However I am pretty sure that it is probable that an investment in the S&P 500 will outperform an investment in any aircraft on the planet for a 10 year period. In fact, the average rate of return for any ten year period for the S&P 500 is almost 7%.

Think of all the investments you could be making with that extra money!!!! From the MX numbers posted in this thread about the cost to operate a PC12 you are wrong about the higher opex costs on cheaper plane. Spending more does not always mean cheaper to operate. I would bet just about everybody here operating a MU2 or Commander does it cheaper than a PC12. I know I do.

For people who can’t or don’t want to pay for a PC12, there are options that fit different scenarios. And yes - roughly similar things. Travel at something like 270kts or better, roughly 1300nm or better, carrying 4-8 people. Landing at airports that have similar characteristics.

Lack of knowledge.
I am guessing you had no idea what a MU2 or Commander, was when you bought your Pilatus.
The pilatus is also a good airplane if you can get over the lack of an engine! Its biggest attribute has been its ability to holds it value.
Really anything bought right should hold its value, legacy TP included. It just take more research to buy the right airplane.
So far all pilatus have held their value, that won’t contunue forever.

I think there are better 3 million dollar airplanes, but that’s just me and maybe a few others here.
Personal preference, I just like two engines better than one for that kind of money.
My comments were not about the safety of the Pilatus nor the MU2.

No one is saying MU2 over a PC12. It's a great plane. I have not heard anyone say a PC12 is dangerous, just expensive.

. Steve, what's your hourly on your commander? I looked very carefully at a 900/1000........I really, really liked those airplanes. Felt that going with an airplane in current production offered more options from service to parts to ongoing 'stuff'. When I reviewed total cost of ownership the PC12 won by a hair (my spreadsheet, maybe not reality).
