Just clarifying - I am guessing some don't buy hull insurance but I would think few would self-insure the liability part, right? I don't got the cojones to go naked on liability!
it is not possible to purchase just hull insurance and no liability. You can however purchase liability without hull coverage. I would say it is very common (for those that don't self insure) for IVP and IVP turbine owners so go 'liability only' as hull insurance for this make and model is ridiculously high.

Question for Tom,
Is it possible to purchase External liability only... ie no insurance for the aircraft occupants, but insurance to protect any un-involved third parties.....

Paul- Yes some carriers will offer for instance $1m in liability excluding passengers - however this liability limit is generally associated with ground not in motion hull insurance (or non flight hull coverages). I don't think I can recall a policy written with full flight coverages and liability to exclude passengers (unless of course you are insuring an aircraft which has no passenger seats (such as a single seat machine).

Lancair, except for the Evolution was sold to the Huffstuttlers of Sierra Ind. In Uvalde TX. This is great news, and I predict improvements for the -IV & IV-P...
They are really smart people.....And good business folks too....

That's great news. I was thinking RDD bought them; obviously not.
Mine is getting really close to being done. New G3X panel, air conditioning, condition inspection by the best in the business!
I miss it and have gone on virtually no trips lately; Lancairs are real lifestyle assets/time machines.

I think I'm going to keep it a long time. I obviously have severe airplane ADD but there's really nothing else out there can do what this airplane does:
1) Can land on grass 2) Piston (turbine ban at my grass strip) 3) Good looking 4) 250kts+ 5) Long range 6) Fun to fly 7) good climb rate 8) pressurized 9) air conditioning 10) state of the art avionics 11) Relatively good value
I really can't think of another airplane that does all this stuff so well.

For two people and small dog or two, it cant be beat. It would be perfect if it had a baggage compartment that could hold stuff for four people. Space is really its only shortfall.

Owner is obsessed with the grass and thinks all turbines will burn up his field. Not really fair or logical...

It will hold 2 roller bags and that's about it so I 100% agree with your assessment. It's a comfortable 2-3 seat airplane. 4 people on a trip would likely require FedExing luggage which is probably not that big a deal. I'm done playing airline for my friends which is exactly what a Baron encourages.
