ATC gave us direct straight out of the bat and in no time whatsoever we were at FL280. Just before us was a brand new TBM 900/930 on a conforming flight (they do final deliveries at CMA), and we left him in the dust in the climb. He was panting at 9700ft when we were climbing through 12000ft overtaking him... Steve has spared no expense on his 980. It started out as a bankruptcy sale that had been sitting for awhile, unloved, but now it's like factory new. New engines, new paint, new interior, new panel - you name it. Very impressive plane. I'm extremely jealous. Pictorial: Wow, Steve has a beauty there.

Beginning of my trip report: I'm waiting around the FBO at Camarillo in the early evening to meet the ferry pilot I will be flying with across the Atlantic and a guy lands and rolls up in this - Royal Duke. Turns out he owns a couple of them... Personally, I think the Duke was one of the best looking planes built. The Royal Duke is a good performer. Impressive seeing the little Duke rocketing 4,000+ FPM

Which airport was that and why is there such a large displaced threshold?
Steve, is it SOP to go props high in a commander before taking the active?

Steve, is it SOP to go props high in a commander before taking the active? Erwin it's KCMA Camarillo Ca. The runway is 6,000 feet and used to be more than 8,000 when it was an Air Force Base. In 1974 when the city inherited the airport from the government, the very ignorant and corrupt politicians of Camarrillo did not want the airlines and Jumbo jets coming into KCMA. So they removed the ILS and shortened the runway.

Gerald, that is unbelievable! I couldn't believe the nice hard surface real estate before the threshold and figured there had to be a story behind it. It is amazing how often poor decisions are made due to politics/corruption no matter where. Corrupt politics does not always end as it did for Nicolae Ceaușescu but then again sometimes it does

You can at 00:59 hear the warning tone go off and compare to that - I wouldn't say the noise is excessively loud in relation. Adam - is your plane still not ready?

Adam seems to have found a way to incur significantly lower hangarage and fuel costs than the rest of us.

Steve, is it SOP to go props high in a commander before taking the active? Yes that's SOP you do it early enough to give the underspeed governor a look. The displaced threshold is put to good use. You can see chalk lines form the auto cross they do on the weekend. Fun and a nice group.

Username Protected wrote: Wow that plane seems loud. Is it really that loud or an effect of the video? I thought the same thing when I viewed the video? According to my iPhone DB reader it is quieter than my 421. I have some noise cancelling headsets in back but nobody ever uses them. I can take off headset and just use cabin speaker in cruise if I need a break from the headset.
