Just play some soothing jazz. Some Queen perhaps? Another one bites the dust maybe? too soon...sorry. Maybe when we land.

This was in reference to the idea that it could be done only with the addition of auto throttle, not auto-gear, auto-flaps, etc. on other airframes, like maybe a PC12.

Yes I understand it "could" be done. But I do not think it "will" be done. I think the intricacies of playing a video for pax during an emergency that have no idea what's going on and expecting them to perform is crazy. Just my opinion.

Username Protected wrote: My question is: how far out are now for GA CatIII approaches? There is still a little step between this and a proper CatIII. This is "just" flying the airplane, as in, taking care of the trajectory. Which is what, 10% of your job as a pilot? Statistically it's remote, but it would be interesting if 2 planes activated the system, and they would approach the same place at the same time. Tcas? Both planes on the runway? For CatIII, it takes a lot more than the control of the plane. You need reliability, you need the environment to be set up just for that (no plane on CatI holding point, for instance), and you still need a pair of pilots to monitor it. Yes the plane does cross-check itself during the approach, but the fun starts when there is a deviation, and the system is not aware of it, like a slowover. Without you noticing and taking action, the plane would not land on the runway. This is a brilliant system. No doubt about it. But it's only valid for emergencies, in my opinion, in that it raises your chance of survival. Get a catII or catIII rating, see all the complexity behind the logic (or vice-versa ) and like me you may come to the realization that to do it on a daily basis like we do, it's not enough.

Seems to me this is just a bit better than not dying for sure; kind of like using synthetic vision to land the plane in a dire 0/0 emergency.

No doubt WAAS has its limitations (I think up to +-27’ at centerline. However what is to preclude it from one day flying an ILS to Cat III standards? Then next step is airlines having single pilot ops.

Can a PC12 NG or NGX fly this route MBPV-CYOW non stop? I have done 1650nm with little to no wind in our NG before at max cruise and landed with just under 1 hour of fuel. With higher winds, you should be able to do 1540nm easily at max range power but the times can get long. Either way, you’ll need RVSM. NGX at max power should be able to do 1540nm in most winds no problem. I believe the first NGX delivery is in March.
