No, aircraft were routinely shipped in containers and assembled in theater, particularly when the aircraft in question didn't have the capability of flying across the Pacific. I don't know about the grease paper for crated aircraft specifically, but it was common to use similar packaging for metal goods.
Still, I'll agree that it seemed a little too far-fetched to be true.

That's why entrepreneurs who soldier on and succeed despite this phenomenon are to be greatly admired. Many go on to own Bo's, Barons, King Airs and others! Seems a just reward for putting up with the BS. If it were easy everyone would be doing it.
